Techno-Hell: Utah and Oregon Now Require GPS Trackers on EVs in Lieu of Registration Fee, Tax Drivers by the Mile
PJ Media ^ | 8/13/23 | Ben Bartee

State governments have historically generated revenue to maintain roads, traffic lights, and the like by adding a tax at the pump. Owing to the federal government-prodded transition to electric vehicles (EVs) to combat something called “climate change,” states stand to lose out on this source of revenue as EVs obviously don’t require gasoline to operate.

Utah’s novel solution is to charge a “per-mile fee” for EVs with a government GPS tracker attached to monitor movement.

Via the Utah Department of Transportation:

"Utah roads are maintained using taxes from gasoline sales. As vehicles become more fuel efficient and the number of electric vehicles grows, the Utah Department of Transportation and Division of Motor Vehicles is changing to a per-mile fee as a way for drivers to pay their portion of roadway operations and maintenance… You will pay 1.00 cents per mile, deducted from the prepaid wallet, up to the amount of the flat fee. Enrolling in Utah’s Road Usage Charge program gives you access to DriveSync® for Utah DOT an app that makes your driving safer and more productive through trip tracking and driving reports."

We shouldn’t be celebrating when Deep State sticks it to fellow citizens.

Did you see a day or two ago that the “Conserve Mode” in the Rivian pickup truck changes the front alignment so much (camber and toe-in) that front tires are wearing out in as little as 6,000 miles! The truck lowers ride height to improve aerodynamics which ruins the front alignment. Another HA HA HA!!

The “fuel economy Gods” must be appeased at all costs. Who cares if you have to buy new tires every 6,000 miles at $3,000 a pop? Your government knows best.

You will pay 1.00 cents per mile,

Indiana gas tax is 18¢ per gallon.

I get 23 MPG

I'll pay LESS than an EV per mile.

Enjoy the suck

THEN, it will be required for ICE drivers to have them installed as well.

If you own a 2016 or newer vehicle, you probably have it already. I believe they refer to it as "On-Board Telematics"; it squirts your vehicle's data to cell towers.

Their plans will be thwarted. They won’t be in power much longer.

“How can you tell your antenna is no longer working? Will the police have a detector that can detect this? Can they prove you knew it was not working? (Crappy manufacturing installed a defective wire, the wire separated and we can’t tell.)”

So when you’re pulled over for speeding and you tell the cop that your speedometer isn’t working does he say “No problem, just get it fixed.” No the cop is going to say the same thing the judge is going to say, the owner has all responsibility for ensuring that all equipment is operating as designed.
You may slip by once but I doubt it when taxes disguised as fines is at stake.

Repeal gasoline taxes and tax all vehicles by mileage, or mileage adjusted for weight. As to privacy concerns, install a tamper proof odometer and use that. That would avoid tracking location.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ... tax bicycles too, although the sensible way to cover that would be pay a lifetime mileage/weight fee upfront as a lump sum at the point of purchase. Just tack a nominal ten cents onto the purchase price. That’s better than trying to collect a couple of mills each year on hundreds of millions of bikes.

My company is required to track my work location by zip code so that the state where I'm working gets to tax the income I earned within a given state boundary. Expect a similar scheme to be implemented such that you are paying VMT to every state where you drive. Telematics systems already have a GPS and a cellular connection, so periodic reporting to a common database and distribution of usage to each state will become the "norm".

And then they’ll say you’ve driven enough, we’re shutting you down.

Has anyone bothered to research HOW LONG TIRES LAST ON EV’S DUE TO THEIR EXCESSIVE WEIGHT?

Yes they have.

Just guessing, but I would surmise that there will be more problems resulting from this than meets the eye.

I can see a Supreme Court case on this. They could probably justify the taxing by miles, but tracking where you are would be a violation of civil rights.

And perhaps increased rates during peak drive time. To clear traffic congestion, of course.

Then it will be GPS trackers on ALL vehicles.

Just because you don't use them doesn't mean they are not already on the cars.

I was messing around with the Toyota app for our new Highlander and selected the function to allow guest drivers and danged if it didn't 't warn me every time my wife broke speed limit, so I disable that function and allowed the trial period to expire. That doesn't mean that data is not being sent to Toyota or the government all the time anyway.

That’s only about 4 Starbucks coffees.

What this country needs a a good 5¢ cup of coffee.

I actually remember when that was a real thing even included refills.
