Ramaswamy calls Juneteenth a ‘useless’ holiday

GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called Juneteenth a “useless” holiday during a campaign event with voters in Iowa on Saturday.

Ramaswamy’s remarks, first reported by NBC News, come after he celebrated the holiday earlier this year on June 19, saying it is about honoring how far the country has come and how people can advance through hard work, commitment and dedication. He called for a range of proposals concerning the country’s elections on Saturday, including that all voting happen on one day, having all paper ballots and declaring Election Day a national holiday instead of one of the “useless” ones.

Re: "The end to slavery is worth celebrating"

It is, but we also need to remember the truly staggering financial, political, and personal costs.

10% of the young men in the USA were killed, maimed, or permanently disabled by the Civil War.

Close to 100% of the slaves were abandoned in the former slave states. LOL - in what country did that GREAT idea ever work out?

Financially, the crushed Slave states did not completely recover for 100 years.

Politically, America is still suffering from the destruction of States Rights and the concentration of political power in a couple square miles of Washington D.C.

Someone should ask him about Hindu Holidays. I don’t want 100 Idols in the White House. Sorry.

Election day holiday would benefit future of USA much more than hashing over liberation of slaves. But the dumbing down of American has been a spectacular success, thanks to the teachers union and democrats and republican white guilt.

I became naturalized in 1970, I what happened during Lincoln presidency is as stupid as it gets for America’s future.

Juneteenth celebrates the anniversary of the last U.S. slaves being freed in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, following the end of the Civil War. Yes, in Texas, but slavery persisted in Delaware, Kentucky and in a limited way in New Jersey until the 13th Amendment was ratified December 6. We don't need more holidays, but that would have the appropriate date. Our Delaware President should have known that. In fact he did, attributed to him in the South Carolina primaries Delaware, he noted, was a 'slave state that fought beside the North. That's only because we couldn't figure out how to get to the South. There were a couple of states in the way

Right up there in uselessness with 'MLK' anything

That's as useful as a rattlesnake's rattle to warn you that you're in danger and should be somewhere else.

Neither do I, but libs just can’t leave it at that. The formal name of the holiday is Juneteenth National Independence Day, putting it on the same par as Independence Day. If it has been called Emancipation Onservance Day, or something like that, I’d feel differently

Why can’t the date for the Amendments that made them citizens be celebrated? Instead they celebrate through a made up word up a local Texas event.

Celebrate Juneteenth, as the day: The Civil War had been over for 8 months!

A new chapter in American history opened as the Thirteenth Amendment, was passed in January of 1865, was implemented and Republicans ended Democrat slavery!

That abolished slavery in the United States, and now, with the end of the Civil war, four million African Americans were free.
