GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called Juneteenth a “useless” holiday during a campaign event with voters in Iowa on Saturday.
Ramaswamy’s remarks, first reported by NBC News, come after he celebrated the holiday earlier this year on June 19, saying it is about honoring how far the country has come and how people can advance through hard work, commitment and dedication. He called for a range of proposals concerning the country’s elections on Saturday, including that all voting happen on one day, having all paper ballots and declaring Election Day a national holiday instead of one of the “useless” ones.

Maryland outlawed slavery Nov 1864. Kentucky and Delaware had legal slavery until the XIII Amendment was ratified.,
Idiot. Is he running as a Soros and WEF agent to undermine Republicans? Republicans should be celebrating Juneteenth as it was a Republican success to free the slaves.
I have been celebrating Juneteenth ever since I learned 65 years ago that it is the day the US government executed the Rosenbergs for being traitors and giving the secrets for constructing a nuclear bomb to Russia. But I call Juneteenth Sic Semper Tyrannus Day.

I never cared for June 19th. Now I truly hate it since it’s the day my son died 7 weeks ago. 😢
Anyone supporting Indian anchor baby Ramaswamy on FR hasn’t been reading the threads about him here. So funny to watch the predictable knee-jerk responses supporting him because he parroted something somebody liked. Juneteenth does more to out people ignorant about why this holiday is important and how this is a natural Republican holiday. Opposition to celebrating the Republican led end slavery is easily viewed as racist.
*Initiating controversial topics will bring attention to oneself. It gives one the floor, and a chance to speak and be noticed, as the cameras rush towards you. Ramaswamy is now in a GOP election, so it may bring him coverage that benefits him.*
Reminds me of Reagan: “Viet Nam was a noble cause.” The issue was not an issue at the time but he brought it up out of the blue.
Make Juneteenth a whole month. Gay Pride month would object.
Wow.
He is really fun!
Who knew?
I imagine it was planned and considered. Trump did/does the same thing. Initiating controversial topics will bring attention to oneself
Great point. Very little in politics should be taken at face value.
I appreciate the fact that he is standing up to Woke politics in a clear and unambiguous manner, but I agree with those who say this is an error.
When do the riots start? 🍿🍿🍿!!!
Exactly
Bold move by Vivek to take a direct shot at Trump like that. We’ll see if it pays off.
A white American can not say such things. Ramaswamy, as a minority in US can say bluntly what he thinks about reparations, Kwanza, Juneteenth, lack of father figure in majority of African-American society, Welfare queens, or any other taboo subject.
No benefit for a political candidate to say that.
In fact he should know history.
Juneteenth is when Republicans freed the last slaves that Democrats were holding.
he’s right, but now he is dead
.....
no. he can say that sort of thing because he is not white.
“no, he can say that sort of thing because he is not white.”
I think Juneteenth is stupid as well. If you want to celebrate the end of slavery…the date it was actually abolished would be better. But who wants to have a cookout in early December?
Agree. That is one celebration that needed to happen and was overdue. (Although, being reminded that there WAS slavery may not be best.)
Pride month we can do without. Celebrating perversion is disgusting.
