GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called Juneteenth a “useless” holiday during a campaign event with voters in Iowa on Saturday.

Ramaswamy’s remarks, first reported by NBC News, come after he celebrated the holiday earlier this year on June 19, saying it is about honoring how far the country has come and how people can advance through hard work, commitment and dedication. He called for a range of proposals concerning the country’s elections on Saturday, including that all voting happen on one day, having all paper ballots and declaring Election Day a national holiday instead of one of the “useless” ones.

Not nearly as useless as Kwanzaa.

I have to disagree. While I do NOT agree with reparations, I have no problem with celebrating the end of slavery in this country.

If he doesn't go wobbly and walk it back, he will have earned the utmost respect.

Other than the stupid name of the holiday I have no issue with this holiday.

Celebrating the end of Slavery in the United States, is certainly a reason to celebrate.

NO I don’t agree with all the race hustling poverty pimps who work to divide us by race.. but the ending of slavery should be something worth celbrating.

I imagine it was planned and considered. Trump did/does the same thing. Initiating controversial topics will bring attention to oneself. It gives one the floor, and a chance to speak and be noticed, as the cameras rush towards you. Ramaswamy is now in a GOP election, so it may bring him coverage that benefits him. He wants to show he's not a Mike Pence character.

Gotta disagree. The end to slavery is worth celebrating — by whites as well as blacks.

The holiday is very useful—it stokes up anti-white hate.

He is making the typical mainstream conservative mistake—confusing errors in judgement with evil intent of the enemy.

He’s right since no one cares about it and people already forgot why it’s a day off.
Probably one of the more embarrassing attempts at pandering by polticians in years

Does not quite match the headline. A statement that has it both ways.

Juneteenth should be celebrated as the day that the Republicans ended Democrat slavery.

"I am warming up to this guy"

Me too. The same way I feel about Lindsey Graham every 6 years during election season. The same way I felt about ultra-conservative Paul Ryan during his campaign season.

Ramaswamy speaks the language very well, but he is new and unproven.

Slavery did not end till Dec 6 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified. Two of those five slave states that remained in the Union still had slavery. Maryland and Delaware.

The Civil War had been over for 8 months.
