Yes...the diesel electric drive train would work well, especially the way you described. I’d add optimizing the diesel by tuning it to run at peak efficiency at one speed. Another thought would be to put the power for the EV on the street. Print continuous segmented sheets of thin tough plastic containing induction coils that can be cut to length, like a strip of LEDs, and adhered to the road. The EV would have an induction coil to pickup that power in the road. This would eliminate the large battery bank or diesel motor. One would still need a small battery to get from the electrified road and to one’s house or store etc.
Ah, it warms the heart...
China has fields of abandoned EVs but they tell the government they sold they and the government gives them money , just wait until all those EV batteries start catching fire we’ll see it from here

How do they make for a good choice?
Cheaper Cost? Nope. Their extra costs exceed the gas to run them, and to maintain them.
Cheaper to maintain? Sometimes, but if they start costing, they can out cost the price of just buying another gas car.
Less pollution? Nope. They pollute more locally and globally than a Chevy Suburban.
Safer? Nope. Much less safe since their fires are nearly impossible to put out, the batteries mean firefighters and rescuers must take precautions against electric shock.
Less government interference? Nope. They can be shut down remotely, even steered. Granted, many gas engine cars are in that category too. They also restrict travel just from having to charge up all the time. No going cross country.
There is simply no reason to use an electric vehicle over a gas engine vehicle.
Greenies don’t care that it’s fuel efficient and reliable and mileage is unlimited. In fact, they WANT you to be limited in your movements so they can herd us all into ghettos.

It won’t be charging stations that will be the problem. Those can be installed by the millions all over the place.
The electricity producers and distributors have monopolies. The price of electricity will skyrocket once they have everyone by the short and curlies.
I would, too. Who knows what condition the batteries are in? You don’t want to buy a used EV and then in 6 months be slapped with a battery replacement bill more than you paid for the vehicle.

The government push and funding for these things is totally extra-constitutional, ie none of their freaking business...as with so many other aspects of daily life they stick their filthy noses in.

Unfortunately, blue state imbeciles are very sharing when it comes to stupidity. Actually, they are very coercive about it, insisting that EVERYONE suffer the consequences of their stupidity and insanity.
I would NOT charge an EV inside a garage. And the problem with outside is that it gets pretty cold in the winter in much of the country. That means your range is greatly reduced in cold weather, if it will move at all.
Electric cars are supposed to allow for the abolition of internal combustion engines in personal vehicles. Once we have lost the gas-powered cars, the government will declare electric vehicles completely unworkable as an alternative and outlaw their sale and use. Then, the people will have to walk or bicycle.
The electric vehicle was always a ruse to destroy our personal freedom. This plan is to make sure the government has complete control over everyone. Combine this with digital money and everyone becomes a slave who can be destroyed with the push of a computer button to deny someone’s ability to buy anything.
You speak dissent against the tyrants and you are cancelled and starved to death and cannot flee in an automobile.
Ah yes, and now we come to the real root of the problem.... Even nickle candy bars cost a buck and a half... (sigh)

And, unlike a LI battery which burns rapidly, a shorted capacitor releases its energy in milliseconds. And there’s electric shock as well as heat to kill you.
Wonder how physically and energy-content-wise a suitable automotive capacitor would need to be.
There’s nothing like petroleum fuel, which is safe as long as it’s in a tank.

I will guess that Musk has pledged some of his Tesla shares as collateral for at least some of his Twitter loans.
Back in the days of the minicomputer, it was common to have 5V 50A power supplies. Since switching technology had yet to be invented, those supplies contained massive transformers and capacitors that looked like tall-boy beer cans. I saw one of those explode in front of a bench technician. He lost both eyes and picked up a scared face. It scattered tools from the table.
