Trump admitted on tape he didn’t declassify ‘secret’ military plan: report

Former President Donald Trump was recorded in 2021 acknowledging that he had kept “secret” military documents from his time in office without first declassifying them.

The recording of the 76-year-old’s admission has been obtained by federal prosecutors, who secured an indictment of Trump on charges including willful retention of national defense information after retrieving thousands of documents from his Mar-a-Lago resort.

“As president, I could have declassified, but now I can’t,” Trump, 76, said about a classified Pentagon paper outlining a potential military strike on Iran, according to a transcript of the meeting reported by CNN.

“Secret. This is secret information. Look, look at this,” the 45th president also said. “This was done by the military and given to me.”

This is interesting. First, getting past the persecution aspect of all of this, if Trump did discuss and conspire to hold classified materials without declassifying them, and if he is recorded discussing that, that is a problem. Yes, he runs his mouth too much, yes, he is very bad at picking the people to work with him, obviously the person recording could not be trusted. At times, I wonder if he has ever had a good hiring pick?

If there is a recording, if he admitted or conspired to keep docs that were not declassified, even by him, that is very big and problematic issue. It will be a losing issue. Can you (and his lingering supporters) really bully and badmouth people to stay in line? Will he gain votes for his actions?

Sorry, there is no upside to this if it is real.

Whatever the merits of this indictment itself, this will not sit well for most folks when the senile moron in office is known to have boxes and boxes of classified documents in possession in all sorts of unsecured places. And the timing sure is suspicious with the House bringing the heat on the Biden family payoffs.

That is a problem these days. It’s far too easy to fake anything now.

But yes, if true, this is not small potatoes. Lord knows we peons couldn’t even get away with leaving a Conf drawer unlocked without getting a dressing-down (happened to my cubicle-mate co-worker). I myself had to be with Conf documents at all times when I was on “travel”, not to mention at the yard.
