A commission to consider reparations to address the effects of slavery will proceed in New York under a bill passed Thursday by the state Legislature.
“We want to make sure we are looking at slavery and its legacies,” said state Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages before the floor debate, AP reports.
“This is about beginning the process of healing our communities. There still is generational trauma that people are experiencing. This is just one step forward.”

I don’t believe it was ever legal in CA. As for NY, I think they followed PA’s lead and phased it out over a short period of time once the Constitution was ratified. The only northeast state to immediately ban it upon ratification of the Constitution was MA.
New York’s long history as a slave state, and the untold wealth they derived from their cotton crops is now coming back to bite them in the ass.

On the upside, given the way inflation is going, we could proceed with giving them a billion dollars each, having them legally bound to never again accept government handouts, make race baiting commentary, or ever pursue any racially based charges ever again.

The goal is not billions, or trillions, of dollars.
The goal is to establish the debt, as a principle of law, with an initial payment of $1.
Once the laws are changed to say that all white people owe all black people money, then politics devolves into an annual debate of “how much, and how fast?”
