Wallowa County became the 12th Oregon county to join the "Greater Idaho" movement when special election results on the measure were finalized Tuesday.
The vote originally took place in May, with preliminary results showing support for the effort leading by only 21 votes. After all votes were finalized in June, the lead shrunk to only seven votes, narrowly avoiding the state requirement for a recount.
The "Greater Idaho" effort originally began in 2020 as an idea for large swaths of rural eastern Oregon to secede and join the more conservative Idaho to get away from the western, progressive part of the state.
With Wallowa County's vote, 12 out of 12 counties that have held an election on a "Greater Idaho" measure of any kind have voted in favor of exploring the move.

I think I saw a report that said 15 counties were necessary for the change to take effect.
At what point does the wanna be translate into reality, Idaho?
And........ cities are failing
The counties of a state should be able to vote to remove a single county from the state... something like say, each county needs a simple majority for yes/no and 80% of all counties must vote yes to separate from the loathed county.
Think Illinois and Chicago’s Cook county....
This is very interesting. If the counties could actually change states, those counties that are left in Oregon would become in deep peril to the then large communist voting block.
Therefore, as more counties vote to leave, I would think borderline counties would be forced to rethink their positions and vote to leave also. If they don’t, and the transfer to Idaho is successful, their lives turn to ****. Voting to leave may be there one and only chance to have a normal live without selling their property and moving.
Go ahead and vote to leave, if nothing happens, no harm done. If these counties do leave your county goes to and live remains sane. If you do not vote to leave and they do leave, you are in a world or hurt. Otherwise no change. The only proper decision for any rural county at this point is to vote to leave.
How could these rural counties NOT want to take that golden opportunity for freedom? Why in hell would they want to remain in the Cali-like hellhole of Oregon?
I’d love to see red counties across the country draw inspiration from this effort. Breaking free of corrupt, hyper-leftist cities would be the best development that could happen.
And refuse to let the cities annex land to expand their borders.
The movement makes a definite statement but it isn’t going to happen. The state’s rulers won’t let them go.
Seems pointless since Idaho won’t be “deep red” for long.
Well, that, and the consent of the Oregon Legislature, the Idaho Legislature, and Congress.
Easy-peasy.
Why do you say that?
As we are far away from any big inner city, we can afford a certain amount of Schadenfreude, and watching the current commercial and elite earners leaving San Francisco is a marvelous case in point. Our city is not falling apart, so policies and elections matter, about which I am sure we agree. Hope you're not to "inner city" involved.
Idaho will be swamped with refugees from California like Colorado, AZ, NV, etc. Plus they have a big Mormon population that is politically unreliable. Basically, it’s too nice a place to not be destroyed by the Marxist locust.
Why would Congress be involved? A new State is not being formed. Idaho already exists. This is a boundary line adjustment.
The number of Representatives and Senators remains unchanged.
“Whether such things will be successful THIS TIME, I find it fascinating that various instances of “walk away” are being seen all across society, as church denominations schism by essentially political lines, businesses are being informally boycotted in so many ways, and conservative voices in local school board elections are having their effect. More examples may be seen. The political Left is moving so far Left that Democrats are leaving, one by one, including ex-elected Democrats, with a few still in office crossing party lines. People walk away. It is an excellent, “small” strategy, akin the the Smith notion of “invisible hands.””
The nation’s people are “self-sorting”. Everyone wants to make sure they are on “their” side of the chasm before the gap becomes so deep and so wide there is no chance of it ever again coming together.
Do you really think the Oregon legislature will allow electoral votes to go away and thereby turn red? They look at the big picture better than we do.
A very functional and clear-meant phrase. Thanks. I am gonna use it!
“A very functional and clear-meant phrase. Thanks. I am gonna use it!”
Feel free to do so! It perfectly describes what people in our nation are now doing. The conservative outflows from democrat-controlled states are of those who previously thought they could make a difference or at least get along with their liberal neighbors. They now realize that such is not possible and are “getting out while the getting is good” and taking their tax dollars with them.
