OTTAWA, June 6 (Reuters) - Authorities in New York, Toronto and Ottawa on Tuesday warned residents about the health risks from air polluted by smoke from unprecedented early summer wildfires in eastern Canada.
An unusually early and intense start to wildfire season has set Canada on track for its worst-ever year as warm and dry conditions are forecast to persist for months.
There are blazes in nearly all of Canada's 10 provinces and territories, with Quebec the worst impacted due to multiple fires caused by lightning.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a health advisory for counties including New York, Bronx, and Queens.
The state recommended residents consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.
The Canadian capital of Ottawa, which neighbors Quebec, was covered in haze on Tuesday morning, with air quality in category 10+, the worst level on Environment Canada's Air Quality Health Index, indicating "very high risk".

Add Pennsylvania to the list of “Code Orange” states.
We could smell smoke in New Jersey. We’ve seen haze and red suns from distant fires before, but this is the first time we’ve been able to smell fires 500 or more miles away.
I drove about 40 miles in SW Michigan today and it was hazy all the way. I saw nasty smoke quite a bit in Nevada in recent years but it was much worse, never Michigan, to be sure it is a rather dry spring in these parts.
How does smoke set off an alert?
Well I’m in the Toronto area and haven’t noticed much here but they are saying to stay indoors and keep windows shut for a while. Maybe tomorrow I’ll notice something.
annoying like a smoke detector going off while you’re cooking
I have two....I was fanning the wrong one...it wouldn’t stop...lol
Winds are WNW here, whereas fires are north. I was hoping the westward shift would help, but it isn’t.
Prayers for those most closely affected.
we live in eastern Washington and late summer early fall there are fires in the middle of the state....sage brush, wheat fields, forests...and we have to live with horrible smoke for several days, sometimes longer.....so we know what it feels like...
Must have made quite a racket when every smoke alarm in Ottawa went off.
Millions of acres of forests in western Canada have been burning for more than a month. Now eastern Canada said “hold my Molson” and blazes have been popping up there in the last week or so.
Some of us take the battery out :)
Are these fire from those women fire fighters controlled burn? https://freebeacon.com/politics/burning-down-barriers/
Who knows these days. Most of the fires I would guess are started by lightning.
They are Air Quality alerts.
It would be normal for this pattern of pressure set up over the eastern US.
The alerts are all the way to the Carolinas. It is for folks with breathing problems.
I am in Havre de Grace, Maryland at the moment and the air is hazy and smoky.
a colder front is gonna hit and supposedly drive the smoke and haze down as far as florida-
Sorry, all. I was just frying bacon.
