Hannah Holmes of South Portland loves her electric lawnmower. It's quieter and more eco-friendly than your typical gas mower. She can push it with one hand.
But it has its drawbacks. One battery has just enough charge to last about 30 to 45 minutes. People who have big yards either need multiple batteries — which are not cheap, Holmes noted — or need to accept that mowing the lawn will have to happen in stages. And you can't let the lawn grow too long.
"It doesn't like tall grass, it just doesn't have the horsepower of a gas-powered motor, so it'll stall out on tall grass," she says, carefully maneuvering the push mower through a hillock of grass.
It's springtime, and people are starting to plant flowers and mow their lawns. South Portland is looking at ways to make that process more climate-friendly as part of its sustainability goals. It's a small part of South Portland's ambitious One Climate Future plan.
But it's wrapped up in the effort to move away from gas-powered vehicles. Part of that effort could be phasing out traditional lawnmowers' use in the future. That suggestion has mostly been met with resistance.
"For my business it would cost upwards of six figures just to purchase the equipment needed to replace our small engine fleet, not including the charging infrastructure and the batteries that would be an additional cost," he said.
For residents like Ed Haskill, the city's entire climate strategy is pointless, given the global scale of greenhouse gas emissions.
"Yes, it would be nice if everything was perfect and wonderful and we could change the world in South Portland, but until you get India and China onboard, you ain't changing the climate," he said.

30 minute run time? I have a smallish yard, maybe 1/4 acre yet it takes me more than a half hour to cut the grass. I hate cutting grass and refuse to accept that I need to do it in stages. What a bunch of self-retarded brainwashed morons.
I hate cutting grass, but every time I fire up my gas mower, followed by my gas weed wacker and my gas blower, I get a jolt of satisfaction. Kind of makes me want to get out my gas chainsaw.
It's like anything else -- use a tool that's appropriate to the job/application. If that means two tools, so be it.

Gas mowers are the ONLY way to efficiently and quickly cut grass. However the BEST trimmer I’ve ever used is a DeWalt 20v cordless. I have a LOT of DeWalt cordless tools and they are great. For a trimmer it’s not on ALL the time like a mower...at least for my yard...so the battery time isn’t an issue especially with a 4 or 6 amp hour battery.
When my riding mower recently gave up the ghost, I bought an electric zero-turn riding mower. I'm able to cut 1.5 acres (the combined mowing area of mine and my mother's lots) with it but need to recharge when I'm about 2/3rds done. Which it can do while I'm weed trimming and blowing the sidewalk, then immediately hop onto the mower and finish the job.
But I have tons of weed trimming anyway (significant time for the riding mower to recharge to finish the mowing job). It probably wouldn't work as well for most people. I was spending over $330 per year on gas + oil change and air filter slip change (sometimes changing the air filter too). So that might pay off for me having the electric mower. We'll see if it holds up as well as a gas mower maintenance-wise.
Ed said the right thing about India and China but he made the mistake of accepting the premise of the argument.
Maybe flip the breaker to your electrical system and fire up the gas-powered generator. Those should be tested from time to time. :)

I have two weed eaters. A small electric one I bought a Lowe’s, (2 batteries) and a big Stihl gas powered one that accepts multiple attachments. I also have a handy electric hand size chain saw, (Saker), and 2 gas powered chainsaws, Stihl & Husqvarna. The same goes with the liberal hating blowers, 2 small electrics and a big Magnum Stihl to make short work of cleaning my big asphalt driveway!
There’s a place for both. Politicians are just lazy whores who cater to the biggest dollar donor. They can take my gas powered outdoor appliances when they pry it from my cold dead dirty hands.
So when my riding mower bit the dust a few weeks ago (I knew it was coming LOL), I bought an EGO electric riding mower and like it so far. But my yard and my mother's yard is a good use case for it (it needs recharging when about 2/3rds done with our yards, but I use that time to do the lots of weed trimming anyway and by then the riding mower is charged more than enough to finish mowing). I wouldn't run out and get one without thinking about it and making sure it works for you.
I’m on 2/3rds of an acre minus house and outbuildings. I have a Ryobi electric. It shreds as well as my gasser. And I could mow at night if I wanted to, it has headlights. Only uses a quarter of a fully charged battery. 40 minutes. I got it for free. I like it. It folds up so I can hang it on the wall in the shed.
I want an electric lawn too. Intrusion prevention.

Electric has some advantages, but benefitting the climate is not one of them. The electricity has to come from somewhere. All things considered; I think gas is better. Ground level CO2 is a fertilizer - it makes the world green.
As the world warms from the last ice age, ocean waters release CO2. Atmospheric CO2 does not cause warming. Warming causes atmospheric CO2.
