Weed and greed: How marijuana taxation went up in smoke
The Hill ^ | 05/09/2023 | MERRILL MATTHEWS

This is a story about weed (i.e., marijuana or cannabis), and it’s a story about greed — greed on the government’s part, which encourages more greed on the part of those willing to break the law for profit.

There has been a long-running debate over legalizing the recreational use of drugs, especially marijuana. Proponents argued that legalization – or at least decriminalization – would undermine black market sales of those drugs. Prices would fall and organized crime and gangs, which have long profited from the distribution and sale of illegal drugs, would diminish. Meanwhile, the government could regulate vendors to ensure quality and safety and, most important to the politicians, tax their sales.

While I never agreed with the argument, it didn’t seem unreasonable. What was needed was a test case to prove the theory. Now we have one.

But Colorado! I heard when Colorado first made weed legal they would be swimming in money and they could give all the socialist boys and girls everything they wanted.

That actually happened. The schools did get money. A lot of it. Then administrators and every one else wanted a piece.

I can say… pregnant women are rarely tested for it. I have seen some results and the amount of drug the baby is developing in is insane.
The kids in Colorado bathed in this during development should be in late elementary and middle school.
But hey, it cures cancer, so maybe these kids will be cancer free forever ;(

Ya, and "its no worse than booze" so "you must be for prohibition"....went the meme.

Now you can't walk downtown Denver unarmed.

And Pueblo??

Illinois legalized cannabis and put a 20 - 41% tax on it. When Missouri (next door) legalized it was at 6% the last I read. Of course the stream of vehicles from Illinois to Missouri must be constant.

I think there’s an analogy to be made with EVs. You say what you have to to get to your real goal....legal weed. Beyond that, they don’t care about the details. With EVs, and green tech generally, the goal is to kill internal combustion engines and the freedom of travel that they provide. Follow them to their conclusions...tyrannical Statism.

I don’t blame the pot alone. Crime in general is up in all metro cities. Denver just went downhill off a cliff. I’ll probably never return. I love Estes Park and the Rocky Mountains but . . . it may not be worth the trip now.

These were the lies put out by evil people so they could destroy the people of the USA. Only fools believed them.

80% - 90% of the weed in California (by far the largest producer) is black market.

Everyone in the legal market is losing their ass, going bankrupt.

SOME retailers are buying black market weed to sell, hoping not to get caught. Or, not even caring if they get caught because there business is failing either way.

Not to mention the fact that so many are now just growing their own. They end up with a couple of pounds and give it away to friends and family.

Government has simply taken over all the vices once operated by the mafia - weed, drugs, gambling. Prostitution is next

It simply demonstrates that government is NOT concerned for the welfare of it citizens.

Whodathunkit that legalizing while taxing legal producers more than they can ever profit would kill that business and bring in criminal bootleggers...

Pot is as easy to grow as tomato plants. Unfortunately, cannabis makes people lazy. It's a quandary.

The most important upshot of marijuana legalization is millions of people turning into brain addled zombies who are incapable of working or taking care of themselves.

It’s also a contributing factor, or is even the sole reason, behind an increase of schizophrenia and dementia.
