Pornhub Blocks All of Utah From Its Site
Vice ^ | Samantha Cole

Posted on 05/02/2023 7:58:09 AM PDT by BlackAdderess

In response to a new law that requires porn sites to verify users’ ages, Pornhub has completely disabled its websites for people located in Utah.

As of today, anyone accessing Pornhub from a Utah-based IP address doesn’t see the Pornhub homepage, but instead is met with a video of Cherie DeVille, adult performer and member of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, explaining that they won’t be able to visit the site.

Mormons are everywhere. Probably some difference between the laws. Louisiana might not have a serious punishment in theirs. Or there’s a “within possibilities” clause. There’s a big difference between a law that says a company has to take reasonable pre-cautions, and a law that says even if getting the product are breaking some other law you’re still in violation. I remember when AZ put in a law forcing anybody that sells cigarettes that couldn’t be somewhere a minor could steal them, a lot of places just bailed on selling smokes. Wasn’t worth the trouble.

They can totally get around the location thing with a VPN. The only one instituting a ban is Pornhub. That can be gotten around. The law can be complied with because in Louisiana it’s happening. Probably it could be done better with some sort of blockchain verification.

Or perhaps it’s because they aren’t nice people and will happily go there.

Funny thing is... If we keep accepting more regulation and censorship for “moral reasons” we will be setting a trap for ourselves. The control will move beyond moral “reasons” to cultural, political, and religious “reasons”. The immoral mob will soon dictate what is moral or not moral.

Ironically... We will be left with only one option to freely use the internet without regulation and censorship. We will be forced to go underground and use the “immoral” Dark Web or not use the web at all.

1. Filter the sites on your end (computer). Easy to do.

2. Control access to your computer.

3. Already today, search engines make sure that autocomplete does not fill in adult content and also have filters.

This is a non-issue. A moot point.

This is where those on the political right end up losing, because they want to legislate their morality onto other people. But sure, do it Utah, but it’s not a good idea elsewhere.

No one is forcing you to consume this product. No one is holding you down, pulling your eyelids open and putting a computer screen with porn on it before your eyes.

***Already today, the only people that see porn are those that are looking for it.***

While this might have some appeal to folks in Utah and is an obvious attempt to politically pander without having a real target (sort of a pointless issue). This is not unlike some politician in NY banning large soda drinks and pretending that’s going to make people healthier. It does have appeal to some folks in a particular geographic area.

I’m sure that Onlyfans is happy about Pornhub banning Utah...

Let the free market solve this problem. There is no lack of internet porn out there, and it seems that pornhub is the only one banning Utah.

Most porn sites make money on advertising. I worked with a guy who ran one.

No. The porn industry is actually really concerned about a lot of that stuff. It’s part of the problem with these kind of laws. It hits the legit distributors who actually take pains to stay away from the kids and the non-consensual and just pushes more of the industry underground to the people who put most of their effort into being untraceable and don’t care.

I don’t really care what they are concerned about. They have been skirting laws preventing children from viewing porn for far too long.

There are a lot of non-Mormons in Utah. Salt Lake City may be less than 50% Mormon now.

No. They haven’t. That’s what I just explained to you. They are very much doing what they can to avoid all that stuff, because they know it’s bad for them. They can be held accountable. They have a big damn corporate office in Montreal, their server farm is in Ontario. They aren’t the problem. Bob’s fly-by-night that puts 4 layers of VPN between their “HQ” that probably moves to a different country without extradition to the US every months and the internet, and probably runs their servers on some freeport on a ship. THEY’RE the ones skirting the law. And they’ll skirt this one too. Because that’s what they built their business to do, ignore the law, any law they can, and never be accountable.

So because they don't like the law to protect minors, they are not going to allow anyone in the state to access their site????

Isn't that shooting yourself in the foot?

How is their refusing to provide service to Utah a bad thing?
