A North Carolina tourist town plagued by rising crime is resorting to hiring off-duty county sheriff's deputies at an overtime hourly rate to help city police patrol the downtown district.
A team of six deputies with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office in western North Carolina are being paid $75 per hour to help their counterparts in the staff-strapped Asheville Police Department (APD) on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., according to a document reported by local outlet Asheville Watchdog.

True story. Four American college women were starting a vacation to visit Mexico. The one I knew said the Mexican official as they entered said to one “You don’t know how expensive it is to live in Mexico these days.” She shrugged and said “Like everywhere I guess.” He repeated it but looked stern.
Her friend took her aside and said quietly: “Stupid. That’s where you give them a bribe. That’s what he means.” She said “What? He doesn’t deserve our money for being a corrupt SOB. I won’t pay anything.” Trip ended rather than battle the authorities further.
It was 2002 last time I was through Ashville. Beautiful place, but even 20 years ago you could see the direction it was taking.
The City of Asheville, a city of peace and love, has chased off 1/3 to 1/2 of its police force and is actively inciting racial hatred seeking reparations, defunding the police and celebrating lynchings.
The city deserves the self inflicted problems it now has.
Decent people avoid Asheville. Unfortunately, the progressive cancer is spreading throughout Appalachia.
Asheville is absolutely gorgeous but its best to just keep driving until you get to the Blue Ridge parkway.

The previous program was titled the Defund Police, Invite Crime Initiative. Just imagine the town reversing course and advertising that they want to hire cops. Why would anyone believe that they would be behind you when you arrest the” wrong type” of person? Any place woke enough to defund police have many other wacko, woke policies. Equity in arrests and prosecutions is no doubt next. You MUST arrest enough Caucasians to make sure there is ‘equity.’

Old leftist extremist blm friend of mine moved there. Sold her house about 5 years ago. Moved to a small town. She could see the destruction that her politics brought.

I wonder how their reparations program is coming along. Last I heard they had only committed 2 million toward it.
They also passed a resolution to celebrate Juneteenth as the day slavery ended. Very strange. That wasn’t the date it ended. It was the date that some people found out about it.
