Controversial Gillette Ad – Toxic Masculinity {zero long term effect on sales}
Audionetwork ^ | 23 June 2021

Posted on 04/14/2023 8:40:22 PM PDT by Cronos

Gillette shocked millions of viewers worldwide with their ‘We Believe: The Best Men Can Be’ commercial. The advert looks back to the brand’s ‘The Best A Man Can Get’ commercial from way back in 1989, rephrasing its tagline to ask the question: Can men do better?

Touching on topics such as the #MeToo movement, the male gaze, the media’s portrayal of women and gender stereotypes, the ad encourages the audience to embrace a new age and suggests that men should hold themselves accountable for toxic masculinity. Aptly, the orchestral track amplifies the serious tone of the ad and underlines the brand’s stance on the issue.

..According to the chief financial officer of Gillette’s owners, P&G (Procter and Gamble), it didn’t. According to CNN Business, after the commercial aired, Gillette sales were in line with pre-campaign levels, by which we can infer that it didn’t make any difference, either positive or negative, to sales.

If you read the article, the assertion that Gillette didn’t lose business is based solely on the testimony of Proctor and Gamble’s chief financial officer.

I used to use Gillette products, but stopped after that ridiculous ad.

Pg has billion dollar brands. They work on the premise that people will stick to the brand no matter if they increase the prices

Long ago, decades ago, I tried one of those double edged razors, the type pictured above, and I thought I was going to cut my throat. Couldn’t get the hang of it. Scared me so much I haven’t tried one again.

Thanks for posting that article.

Leftists think that conservatives share their short attention spans.

They don’t.

“How many freepers still use Gillette products?”

Not me. I grew a beard during the pandemic so I don’t need ‘em anymore.

Count me as another person who stopped using Gillette cold turkey when they came out with the woke ads. I moved to using Wilkinson. I have a hard time believing Gillette did not suffer a bit from that ad campaign…they are such a big company that they can move numbers around from other products to make it look like they were unaffected.

But what if for every conservative man that quit buying them, a ex-female tranny on testosterone treatments started buying them? Then it all evens out...

I haven’t used Gillette products for decades. I’m basically too cheap. I buy either three blade or five blade store-brand disposable razors. They work for me for a rather long time if I don’t skip days shaving. If I let my beard grow over the weekend, it seems to severely dull the blades.

I went with a safety razor and blades. For the same price as one Gillette refill, I can shave for the next six years if I change the blade weekly.

I probably shaved under my beard once in the past six months.

I haven't cut my hair since a few months when this scamdemic started because Great Clips required wearing a mask when we were walking around all over town with no lockdown and no mask.

My wife hates the mountain man look so I trimmed my beard about a month ago but only used my clippers to get reasonably close on my neck.

I just looked in the medicine cabinet and found a 25 year old Gillette Mach 3 that I haven't used in a month of Sundays, so I tossed it.   The razor I would use, if I ever do, is a Schick combo trimmer and blade.

I use an English safety razor with insanely sharp Japanese blades.

That sounds exactly like the kind of setup I could seriously screw up, and to my own detriment.

Just kidding.

Until Mrs. Chandler requested that I grow a beard, I shaved for years with (sharp as $%^&) Parker blades in a beautiful Merkur Futur knockoff.

I discovered, however, that the real secret to a good shave is Cremo shave cream.

My wife bought me Harry’s products, but she said she won’t buy anymore because they went “woke”. The pool of acceptable alternatives is shrinking.
