The world’s first “smart gun” hit the market Thursday, complete with a life-saving fingerprint unlocking system that prevents “unauthorized” people such as kids and criminals from firing it.
The cutting-edge 9mm handgun locks out everybody except the owner and users specifically approved by the owner — technology that could improve gun safety in America, according to reps from the gun-making firm Biofire.
“Right now it seems like the entire country is always processing a new tragedy involving children and guns,” the Colorado-based firm’s CEO Kai Kloepfer told The Post. “We are offering a real solution, at a time when solutions seem very hard to come by.”
The $1,499 gun unlocks in less than a second, using either a fingerprint or facial recognition sensor, then quickly locks again when it’s no longer in use.
As gun control legislation remains largely stalled in the US, the innovation could help prevent everything from school shootings to accidents and suicides, reps from the company said.

Fingerprint readers have problems with sweaty finger tips, yet in a time a stress, you are going to have sweaty finger tips. That’s a problem. Do they have a solution?
Facial recognition is even worse
They always exempt themselves.
Is it A I and if so can it be deactivated (jammed) remotely?
a second is a long time. a perp with a knife fan easly cover 20 to 30 feet in that time. demonstrated by a swat team leader. buy one of these guns and cosider yourself one ofvthe walking dead.
just what i wanna do in an emergency- rely on computer tech to unlock the gun for me-
Agree
The $1,499 gun unlocks in less than a second
You can be dead in less time if it’s a surprise deal
My iPhone works fine...so long as it and my finger are clean. Be just my luck someone kicked in the door while I was eating pizza. These guns will cost more lives than they save.
100% virtue signaling guaranteed! Won’t do a darn thing to help anyone, but it’ll sure make you feeeeeeeel good about it.
“If they do, it needs to start with police, but also FBI, ATF, IRS and any and all other federal departments that carry.”
I know that in at least one blue state, the cops got a cutout on the law that will mandate these guns.
Ian McCollum did a review of this Smart Gun on Forgotten Weapons, just this morning. He gave it a positive review. Kinda surprised me. He claimed the developers were aiming for only one segment of the market, not a ‘one size fits all’.
It is interesting to say the least.
“Hope it works better than the pretend fingerprint recognition on my iPhone.”
LOL! NO DOUBT!
A sensor. What could go wrong? 🙄
Can the fingerprint system be defeated? Answer - very likely, so it’s really only effective for honest gun owners.
What’s the bottom line? A Backdoor extreme tax on gun purchases - around $1000. A clever way to weaken the Second Amendment protections.
What a boatload of bullshit. Yes, only the authorized can fire the weapon. Anything digital can be manipulated by the state. And if they don’t want anyone to fire the gun except cops or government people, that’s what it will be.
...and trigger etiquette will be a thing of the past. Some things should not be biometric. Self defense is one! Way too easy to hack, spy and so forth.
Yep. Nightmare.
Feds go first.
batteries that can will fail.
I am guessing the average non shooter’s night stand gun is bought, brought to the range ONCE, fired. Put into a drawer and NEVER thought about again. What are the odds that bettery gets changed as required?
The sensor, will need to be 100% clear or ANY dust, dirt, lint.
The hands must be clean (dry?)
The user, under stress, will need to make sure that the finger is in EXACTLY the correct position to unlock.
Does this need to be unlocked for every shot?
No thanks. I’ll take antiquated tech.
A gun needs to be 1000% reliable at all times.
Can the Maker be sued or held liable, if the gun fails to fire? and the owner is injured or killed?
