McDonald’s Cuts Pay Packages, Closes Offices Alongside Layoffs Across Chain: Fast-food chain offered some employees a chance to remain with reduced compensation
Wall Street Journal ^ | 04/08/2023 | Jesse Newman and Suzanne Vranica

McDonald’s Corp.’s restructuring this week is reaching company wide, resulting in hundreds of layoffs and for some employees reductions in their packages, according to people familiar with the matter.

Job cuts and changes at the burger chain have affected employees in the U.S. and abroad, at McDonald’s Chicago headquarters and in its field offices, and across departments including marketing and operations, the people said.

The corporate restructuring has unfolded in a multipart process this week, some of the people said and internal company communications showed. McDonald’s temporarily closed its U.S. offices and started informing some corporate employees about layoffs on Monday, The Wall Street Journal has reported.

The fast-food chain also offered some employees a chance to remain at the company with reductions in their compensation packages, including changes to titles and benefits such as bonuses and equity grants, according to people familiar with the matter.

This week’s restructuring moves included role changes or promotions for other employees, including nearly 10 U.S. officers working across operations, finance and marketing, according to an internal company email sent Thursday.

Companies across the U.S. economy are shedding jobs, often white-collar positions, amid concerns about a potential recession. Layoffs that began in the tech sector last year have spread to other industries, with companies from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to Amazon.com Inc. recently trimming their ranks.

McDonald’s told U.S. restaurant owners and operators in the Thursday email that it would close its field offices in coming months, saying that they are underutilized with most field staff spending their time in restaurants. The company said instead it would adopt a single, national structure overseeing its 10 field offices.

“While the McDonald’s Brand is in the strongest position it has been in years, we also recognize that our business has grown increasingly complex in recent years,”

Here come the Robots!

That would be a change for the better if they could replace the order takers too. They act like they are doing you a favor by taking your order. Not a thank you, please come again either. Heck, you’re lucky if you deal with one who speaks broken English.

It's CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING!

It has less than NOTHING whatsoever to do with the price of the products, minimum wage, robots, hamburger flippers, order takers, or any other such nonsense that has been posted to threads since this info came out.

And the original thread/s plainly stated that it was CORPORATE STAFF, which the vast majority ( almost every posts/poster ) ignored completely! It's one thing for Freepers to NOT bother to read the articles; however, to ignore the headline ( or not understand what it said in plain English ) is a new and dangerous thing!

We were going to go into a McDonald’s the other night when we realized our pizza place was closing soon ...none of us had been to a Micky D’s in a while.

When we got there we realized it was a big blocky building with virtually no place to gather and sit inside, because it was really just a large, faceless robotic machine in a brick shell with one or two people inside whose jobs seem to be nothing more than reaching for cash and putting lids on the drinks.

I mostly quit going to fast food places( except Steak n Shake) in the 90s when places like McDonald’s and Wendys started omitting ketchup from orders , making you ask for it. Deliberately providing bad service rather than a couple of ketchup packets was a stupid idea to save money. They could have economized by simply having their employees include a reasonable amount of condiments- instead they let them give you 16 to 20 packets for one order of fries IF you remember to ask for any catsup at all, and none if you forget.
Worse, so many places got woke and started serving drinks in cups that do not keep drinks cold, so the already over diluted contents quickly get warm and watery on hot days.

Steak n Shake remained my only go to place simply because they were the only fast food joint that still served drinks in foam cups and usually they didn’t water the soda down as much as everyone else.

But then when covid hit the supply chain got messed up and they had a hard time getting cups.

What are equity grants? Can I get one? I like equity so I would like my equal share of the free money for just being here.

I wonder how their revenue is structured. They sell franchises, so what percentage of McDonald’s restaurants are owned by individual franchise owners, how much does McDonald’s corporation get from each of these franchises, and how much input does McDonald’s corporation have in the day to day operations of individual privately owned franchises?

Always always order the small fries. Also, ask for no salt on them which makes them fresh cooked and hot.

Of course this is a practice from more than 30 years ago before their food became so tasteless that it was impossible to eat.

When I was a kid I worked at a McDonalds here in Maryland. $1.35/hour. Plus free eats.

Shares in the company, usually in Restricted Units or Performance Share Units, but also options at some company. Once you get to Director level at most companies, you get some equity grants each year that vest over 2-5 years. The higher up you go, the larger the % of your compensation is usually in equity.

Thank you for your posts. Interesting info. I wonder where all this will lead. I’m thinking fewer workers in the stores.

This is due to the robot hamburger flippers.

Only line workers will be impacted.

If only they didn’t go woke, the cashiers and fries-salters wouldn’t be losing their jobs.

If their milkshake and ice cream machines worked, they’d have been fine.

If they had kept their prices low, the company would not need to lay off their minimum wage people.

McDonald’s biggest problem is the horrible quality and lack of taste. It’s been crap since the late 70s.

Absolute balderdascious drivel and just outright ignorance.

Since you don’t go to McDonalds you are not qualified in any respect to comment on the food they serve
