The National Audubon Society, one of the country’s best-known bird conservation organizations, decided in a closed-door vote this week to retain the name of John James Audubon, famed 19th-century naturalist and wildlife illustrator who was also an unabashed enslaver.
The move comes even as about half-a-dozen of the organization’s regional chapters have pledged to scrub his name from their titles, part of a broader reckoning over the U.S. environmental movement’s history of entrenched racism.
The National Audubon Society’s 27-person board of directors voted to retain its current name during a Zoom meeting on Monday after more than a year of deliberating and gathering feedback from both members and outsiders. Susan Bell, chair of the board, declined to provide a breakdown of the final vote.
“The name has come to represent not one person, but a broader love of birds and nature,” Bell said in a phone interview. “And yet we must reckon with the racist legacy of John James Audubon, the man.”

If we knew then what we know now, we would have picked our own cotton.
So when will Washington DC and Washington state change their names? It’s only a matter of time.
Good for them!
But, to counter the charge, they do have pictures of Black Birds in the bird books.
Some sanity at last!
Although once I read that SVB alone had given $74 million (that’s right, million) to BLM, I realized where the power of the left comes from: money. Lots of it, donated by leftist companies and wealthy individuals and allowing BLM and other pressure groups to live large and strut their power.
Glad the Audubon Society, which I’m sure is composed entirely of liberals but perhaps old-school ones, held the line and wouldn’t be bullied.
Better yet, not imported the slaves. Just imagine...
Audobon Society members apparently got past JJA blasting all of those birds. Slavery? Meh.
They will now be cancelled.
Donations and memberships will be attacked, the zoo and aquarium will be picketed and their lives will be a living hell until they submit and obey.......................
“when will Washington DC and Washington state change their names?”
I live in a city that was named for a revolutionary Era figure that owned as many as 300 slaves in his lifetime and posted flyers offering extra bonuses for capturing his runaways and whipping them........I can’t believe the blacks here haven’t caught on to that.
And Jim Crow... Heckle and Jekyll... Woody Woodpecker... Foghorn Leghorn ... I say I say, don’t forget the Road Runner .. Beep Beep... Daffy Duck ... All of the famous birds .. And don’t forget Democrat Robert Byrd who has every third building in west Virginia named after him. In photos, he the guy in the white hoodie.
Just remember....every bird in his books were DEAD birds...
They could just “rename” Washington, DC, and Washington state after Booker T. Washington (except that he wasn’t militant enough). Or after some black athlete named Washington.
“And yet we must reckon with the racist legacy of John James Audubon, the man.”
“.. racist legacy” - yet another judgement of a historical figure using current ideology - how stupid. No indication of the context regarding Audubon’s slave-holding time. Did he inherit slaves? Were they a gift? Did he ever free them? How does the time he shared with black folks in his life have anything to do with his actual legacy?
Leftists are really fooked in the head ...
but they built the USA ... </sarc>
America would be a lot “better place” right now if we did.
It’s probably based upon the massive amount of money they have tied up in advertising and the fliers they send us, seemingly WEEKLY, to donate to them. *Rolleyes*
(We don’t donate; we more than take care of ‘nature’ here on our farm.)
That’s a lot of printing costs down the drain, as well as website re-works, reprinting guidebooks, etc. It ain’t CHEAP to continue operations once you’ve rolled over and allowed yourself to be cancelled by the LefTards!
I’d LIKE to think it’s push back to the wokesters, but most likely it’s more of a financial thing for the entire organization. *SHRUG* :(
Did Audubon get permission from the birds he painted? He may have been a species-ist.
They realized that “Audubon” is a very strong brand. When you think of birds/conservation/naturalism - the word “Audubon” comes to mind.
What would they have changed their name to? The Woke Tranny Fund for Feathered Friends?
They know their fund-raising (and thus their jobs) would have collapsed to zero.
