Sen. Lindsey Graham said Monday he will introduce a bill laying the groundwork for President Biden to use US military force against Mexican drug cartels.
Graham (R-SC) was reacting to the kidnapping of four Americans in the border city of Matamoros — two of whom were found dead Tuesday — and the continued proliferation of dangerous drugs, including highly lethal fentanyl, brought into the United States by the cartels.
“This administration has done nothing about it,” Graham told Fox News’ Jesse Watters.
“I’m going to introduce legislation, Jesse, to make certain Mexican drug cartels foreign terrorist organizations under US law and set the stage to use military force if necessary to protect America from being poisoned by things coming out of Mexico.” he added.
Graham said he agrees with former Attorney General Bill Barr, who wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed last week that the US should designate the cartels as terrorist groups and confront them the same way past administrations confronted ISIS in the Middle East.

“It’s not just the hostages. Number one, I’d do everything I could to get them back. I’d do what [former President Donald] Trump did. I’d put Mexico on notice. ‘If you continue to give safe haven to fentanyl drug dealers, then you’re an enemy of the United States.’” he added.
Graham added that he would warn Mexico “to clean up your act” or “we’re going to clean it up for you.”

Barr went on to urge Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to “stand aside” and let the US take on the cartels if he doesn’t want to do so.
`lindsey spends too much time trying to do think for himself now that sen no name is gone.
Lindsey Graham is a swamp monster. He does what the military wants every time. Sometimes it aligns with us, often it doesn’t. But he should not be listened to. And he should be primaried.
This is madness. The Mexican people are as patriotic as any American — more so than most.
We would be fighting against Mexico for decades.

I suspect that too many in government are getting rich off the cartels for that to happen.
As I understand it he’s proposing military action against the cartels and not to invade Mexico. But I don’t understand how we could take military action against the cartels without having troops on Mexican soil.
If we go down that road it could well become a quagmire for decades, I agree.

I don’t think we would, at least I don’t think are going to send the 101st Airborne to Mexico, but we sent special forces to Columbia and provided intelligence and targeting to their military. Eventually we got rid of Pablo Escobar and their cartels.
We could easily do the same thing in Mexico.
Cartels in northern Mexico certainly present a more direct threat than Russians in eastern Europe. We’re losing more Americans to fentanyl overdoses each year than we lost in the entire Vietnam War, to say nothing of the disorder caused by the mass illegal immigration they facilitate.
But why don’t we try closing the border before we think about invading Mexico?

The cartels have corrupted mexico’s federal government. No reason to believe they haven’t corrupted ours.
