Winning the Next War by Preventing It
Newsweek ^ | Wednesday March 8, 2023 | Sen. John Cornyn

Posted on 03/08/2023 5:54:48 PM PST by canuck_conservative

The impact on America's military readiness is concerning, but the cost of doing nothing is even higher.

Today, the benefit of hindsight allows us to see what Prime Minister Chamberlain didn't in 1938: this conflict is the beginning, not the end. Power-hungry dictators will not be satiated by small territorial gains. In fact, an ounce of success will fuel their appetites. And in this case, it's not just Russian President Vladimir Putin who's ready to dine—it's also Chinese President Xi Jinping.

President Xi has made no secret of his desire to invade Taiwan. The Chinese Communist Party falsely asserts that Taiwan is part of its territory and President Xi has said he wants to be ready to invade by 2027—just four years from now.

Given everything we've learned from the war in Ukraine, there are three key steps we need to take to prepare.

One: the U.S. and its allies must remain committed to victory in Ukraine through strategic investments with thorough oversight. A Russian defeat is the only way to prevent this conflict from spilling across borders in Europe and to keep NATO troops out of the picture. It also shows President Xi that the West is operating in lockstep in defense of democracy.

Two: we must strengthen our defense industrial base to protect our own military readiness and that of our allies. During World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt transformed the United States into the "arsenal of democracy." That arsenal must remain fully stocked....

"And three: we must reduce our reliance on China for semiconductors and other technologies crucial to our advanced weapons systems and so much more. Europe paid the price for its longstanding dependence on Russian energy. We could soon find ourselves in a similar position if China invades Taiwan. Now that we've addressed the chip shortage through my CHIPS for America Act, we must keep Western investment from fueling the Chinese military and economy by increasing outbound investment transparency.

These conflicts are thousands of miles from our shores, but that doesn't mean they aren't our problem. A myopic view of these threats may be superficially appealing, but it fails to confront the current threat landscape. This is not about protecting "them" or "us." The United States has the greatest military in the world. It is fully capable of safeguarding our own national security and promoting democracy around the globe.

What's at stake today isn't the fate of one or two nations—it's the future of democracy itself. Our own security and economic interests are on the line, and we have history as our teacher. If we aren't ready, we will only have ourselves to blame."

Pray for Russia to fail!

I would have to be an utter moron to agree with anything this Deep State profiteer suggests in the area of foreign/war policy.

Winston Churchill, a pretty good student of History himself, said something to the effect of,

“It’s only by understanding the past that we can see ahead into the future”

Depends on what someones definition of “preventing it” means

One could mean discussions

Another could mean preemptive nuclear strike

I pray for liberal world order and neocons to fail. There would be NO war in Ukraine if not of them.

We fomented the Maiden revolution and that set off a civil war in Ukraine. We trained and funded Ukrainian nationalists and neo-Nazis and turned them loose to murder the ethnic Russian population.

We teased NATO membership for Ukraine, ran biolabs with deadly pathogens in them and armed Ukraine with offensive weapons. We sure as hell wouldn't tolerate Russia or China doing the same thing Mexico.

Russia, at EVERY turn, tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution to prevent going to war in Ukraine -- the Minsk Accords, coming to us in December of 2021 and in March of last year in Turkey. We killed any attempt at a peaceful resolution because we wanted this proxy war.

You and your ilk are evil personified. You have us closer to a hot war with Russia, WWIII and a nuclear war than we were during the Cold War. The dollar as the world's reserve currency and petrodollar are endangered by all this nonsense.

You want war with Russia, tell Trudeau and your putrid military to get to Ukraine and into the Russian meat grinder.

Burn in hell, you warmonger, neocon scumbag.

The solution is to stop sticking our noses in nations, destabilizing them and setting off civil wars.

If we stayed out of Ukraine, there would be no war.

Everything you post here is blatant lie and you're defending the actions of political class and their financial backers that use military force to enrich themselves.

You are lying piece of trash.

Russia didn't have to be our enemy. You and your ilk MADE Russia our enemy and forced them into an alliance with China. THAT HAS ENDANGERED OUR NATIONAL SECURITY.

As I said, you and your ilk are evil personified.

Russia, at EVERY turn, tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution

would that be the same Russia that repeatedly attacks and invades its neighbors?

LOL

sounds like you're the liar!

“Russia didn’t have to be our enemy. You and your ilk MADE Russia our enemy and forced them into an alliance with China. THAT HAS ENDANGERED OUR NATIONAL SECURITY.”

...and some of his buddies here are claiming that Russian nukes might not even work if fired at us.

I guess we can guess our kids and grand kids goodbye, thanks to these horrific WARMONGERS.

Seems more likely that there have been people asleep for the past 30 years - they still haven’t processed the fact that the Soviet Union no longer exists and that China WAS our only long-term threat that we would be forced to deal with.

That may be true of a large portion of the population. But, it's not true of our political class. It wants wants to destroy Russia, break it into smaller countries and raid it like they have raided Ukraine. It's modern-day imperialism.

Modern-day Russia IS NOT THE OLD SOVIET UNION. Only someone painfully ignorant believes that.

The way neocons use our foreign policy is comparable to Soviet expansion. The "liberal world order" couldn't care less if it has destabilize countries or setoff civil wars if that is what it takes to enrich itself.

Our foreign policy no longer seeks to make life better for people in the rest of the world. It's all about enriching our political class, its financial backers and the defense industry.

Russia is not the old Soviet Union. Putin is making it the new Soviet Union. He changes the constitution and has now been in power de facto for 23 years. Putin dedicates Stalin statues. Putin arrests and murders political opposition.

Putin solves problems by sending in armored columns. The old Soviets did that in Hungary and in Czechoslovakia. Putin does it in Georgia and Ukraine.

Brave Russians oppose Putin (Boris Nemtsov, Yulia Latynina, Olga Smirnova, Alexei Navalny, Mikhail Khodorkovsky). Cowardly limp-wristed Putin sycophants like Kazan support him.

Putin is a war criminal and deserves justice which would be death by hanging.
