Road Trip: Camp Mabry, Texas

TXcampmabry1

Camp Mabry is a military installation in Austin, Texas, housing the headquarters of the Texas Military Department, Texas Military Forces, and Texas Military Forces Museum. Established in 1892, Camp Mabry is the third-oldest active military installation in Texas, behind Fort Sam Houston and Fort Bliss.

It was named for Brigadier General Woodford H. Mabry, the Adjutant General of Texas when the camp was founded. The camp was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

TXcampmabry6

The mission of the Texas Military Department (TMD) is to provide the Governor and the President with ready and trained forces in support of the citizens of Texas and State and Federal civil/military authorities at home and abroad.

Camp Mabry currently hosts other branches of the Reserve components of the United States Armed Forces from the United States Army Reserve, the United States Navy Reserve Navy Operations Support Center (NOSC Austin) and the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

TXcampmabry5

Camp Mabry has served a variety of military purposes since its establishment. It was used as a mobilization area during the Spanish–American War, as headquarters for the Texas Defense Guard during World War II, and as a training facility for the Texas DPS and the Texas Rangers until 1953. It has also hosted the Texas National Guard's State Officer Candidate School since 1959.

Other facilities include the 136th Regional Training Institute, state Combined Support Maintenance Shops, the armory of the 36th Infantry Division headquarters, a clinic, a parachute packing and storage facility, and additional storage buildings. In 1992 the Texas Military Forces Museum opened on the site.

Protect Your Heart

Bible in a Year:

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 Hungarian-born mathematician Abraham Wald lent his skills to the World War II efforts after coming to the United States in 1938. The military was looking for ways to protect its aircraft from enemy fire, so Wald and his colleagues at the Statistical Research Group were asked to figure out how to better protect military aircraft to defend against enemy fire. They began by examining returning aircraft to see where they were most damaged. But Wald is credited with the keen insight that damage on returning aircraft represented only where a plane could be hit and still survive. He realized that areas most in need of additional armor would be found on planes that had crashed. Planes hit in the most vulnerable part—the engine—had gone down and therefore couldn’t be examined.

Solomon teaches us about protecting our most vulnerable part—our heart. He instructs his son to “guard [his] heart” because from it everything else flows (Proverbs 4:23). God’s instructions guide us through life, steering us away from poor decisions and teaching us where to focus our attention.

If we armor our heart by heeding His instructions, we’ll better “keep [our feet] from evil” and remain steadfast on our journey with God (v. 27). We venture into enemy territory every day, but with His wisdom guarding our hearts, we can stay focused on our mission to live well for God’s glory. Reflect & Pray

What is your heart most vulnerable to right now? How can God’s wisdom protect you?

God, please protect my heart from the threats against it. I hide myself in You.

Howdy, lauren.

Hangin’ in there these days? You’re probably getting as tired of rain and storms as I am and I hear there’s another chance for them for both of us this week. *sigh*

Howdy, Kathy.

Crazy weather you’re having up there today. It was gorgeous most of the day with the sun shining bright. Lake Hood was busy with small planes taking off and landing. Now a person would have a hard time seeing their hand in front of their face, the fog is so thick. It rolled in fast too! I’m glad you didn’t have to drive in that!

...and here I am *sighing* because we’ve gotten zero rain from any of the storms. I know it’s the desert, but geez! LOL!

Howdy, luvie.

Texas has a LOT of military bases, doesn’t it? Hardly a wonder you haven’t heard of all of them. LOL
It’s fun learning about the bases across the country.

You probably don’t want to hear that it’s pouring here, huh? Just started all of a sudden a few minutes ago.
