Winds are not particularly strong overnight at the flight levels of previous balloons but even so, it would not just hover over Montana all night, it could be over Minnesota or Iowa by daylight. That is, unless it’s lower down where winds are unusually weak, or, if it can be steered remotely. But when it lands, lets the balloon fabric drift off into the sky and self destructs, it becomes very hard to find.

Surface winds and winds aloft are totally different things. Lots of times I’ve seen calm winds on the surface yet stratocumulus ripping by at 20,000 feet.
