When she lost her job at Google last month, Jingjing Tan started worrying about her dog, an energetic, 75-pound German shepherd.
As a foreign worker living in the U.S. on a temporary work visa, if she couldn’t find a job within 60 days, she feared she might have to return to her home country, China. In big Chinese cities, where tech jobs are, keeping large dogs as pets often isn’t allowed.
*** Layoffs have rippled across the tech industry, with more than 257,000 job cuts since last year.
*** While there is no reliable way to track how many workers on temporary visas have been laid off, those in the industry estimate that tens of thousands have been affected. Foreign-born workers, including green-card holders, naturalized citizens and those on temporary work visas, account for nearly one-quarter of all workers in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math, according to a 2019 estimate from the American Immigration Council, up from 16% in 2000.
If H1B workers can’t find new employment within a few weeks, or apply to transfer to another visa, they must leave the U.S. In other cases, immigration lawyers who specialize in employment law say, those laid off while traveling outside the U.S. now find themselves stuck outside of the country, with their work visa no longer valid for re-entry.
*** Companies aren’t allowed to consider national origin when determining whom to terminate, Ms. Alcorn says. “It’s at-will employment,” she says. “Anyone can quit, and anyone can be fired.”

I hear the scammer phone banks in Calcutta are hiring.
Gee, does that mean I will not be seeing any of the snooty, entitled acting, non-tipping, Indian tourists; babbling in Indian dialects , and surrounded by every family member they could manage to also import here, anymore?
Would not bother me one bit...
And how many of the chilly PRC Chinese are actually working intelligence assets for the PLA?
Good. They need to be the very first ones laid off and sent home.
My sympathy meter is pegged at zero.
Semiconductor industry also doing a RIF. Micron in Manassas did one last week.
I sympathize, but America first.
Nothing ignorant about it - H1b should have ended yesterday. Remember that we are a western nation and cannot remain one with large non-western immigration.
nothing says snackin’ like “Tail Nibblers”...WTF? lol
——Now they can go home.-—
No, of course not.
Now they become illegal and therefore favored status to remain hidden somewhere.
I guess those corporate bosses who’ve been whining for years that the number of H1B visas should be increased because they couldn’t get enough “workers” weren’t quite being honest with us.
If they can lay H1B’s off, they didn’t need them and encouraging them to come here was dishonest.
Reduce the number of visas allowed by a like number.
Said the dot not feather who feathered his nest at the expense of US citizens.
And who still encourages everyone to get the clot shot.
Sod Off, Swampy.
+1
My company laid off several thousand people over the last month. I think the only thing I have going for me is as a 62 year old White man, I have my age discrimination lawsuit already prepared for when this day arrives.
Send em all packing and congress too for allowing this mess.
Where’s that little violin?
Automation eventually becomes a problem that I haven’t seen realistically addressed.
When enough non complex jobs go away, where do teenagers, the elderly, and stupid people work?
If they can’t work, people will vote for free stuff.
Eventually working people get sick of working when a certain percentage of losers have a decent enough, low stress life.
Then what?
We are there! We are at the cusp of it!
Its unfolding before us!
I call it the “Star trek Economy”! (Did you ever see anyone in Star Trek who actually had a private sector job?)
People just had “goods & services” “ex nihilo”!
Looked good on TV! Everyone was happy!
I have a feeling reality will be different.
I think it’s a very nuanced issue and folks are looking for a black and white solution. It could turn into a living wage for all or it may produce a revolution.
There’s a book ‘Digital Human’ by Skinner. It gives an idea of where tech giants, WEF, BEV, et al see us. It’s akin to Star trek, a reference he uses. I’d recommend reading it.
There is still time to make changes if folks want or at least it gives a point to start the discussion. This discussion needs to happen, for those that value freedom.
We are running out of time and decisions will be made for us. Once 6G or higher arrives, things will rapidly and radically change on a local to global level.
Thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out.
We are a reactive country, an “f it, will figure it out” type of people.
Things would likely have to get terrible for any change to occur.
I trust fewer than 3% of the population when the Z coordinate is added to decision making…
