Years ago I was picked for jury duty. I was selected for a trial but was rejected when they asked if I had any encounters with the police department that could influence a jury decision. I said yes.
When I was 17 I pulled up to a stop light and was waiting for the green when a cop came up and jerked my driver door open. He then dragged me out of my car and started beating the crap outta me. After a couple of minutes another squad car came up and the other cops pulled the brawler off of me. They cuffed me and drove me to the station where they booked me for disorderly conduct. My mom came down and got me out of jail.
It turned out that a passenger in my car flipped off the cop as we drove by him and the cop thought it was me doing it.
The worst part was ultimately facing my dad, who was away on a business trip at the time.
It’s the locations that are so bothersome to drive to in a huge metro area. Every two years I kept getting picked for JP jury duty, only to sit all day doing absolutely nothing.
Yes, we have that problem too. So far, I’ve been called three times, and never chosen for a trial - we usually get out by noon if we aren’t chosen.
But I got to wander around and see a little of the tiny county seat town :-)
It’s a responsibility, like voting. You just have to deal with it, and try to find something interesting or amusing in it.
What other sources? Link please.
If those first two fire personnel who showed up were in fact firefighters, they couldn’t transport the offender to the hospital because they would have come to the scene in a fire truck. Where would they put him?
From what I gather from the pole camera, they were waiting on an actual ambulance manned with paramedics to arrive. As for the first two not rendering aid, its possible they were informed by the officers that the offender was under the influence of some substance and was combative, and it’s possible the officers were reluctant to uncuff the suspect. I looked like the two fire guys had a monitor, and one appeared to have a blood pressure cuff at the ready to check the subject. This is all supposition on my part.
The NYC cop who NBC had on earlier today (only station I can get on that TV) was predicting some of these cops would have some history like that - that this was not their first such rumble using unjustified force.
I misunderstood your post to be saying that Tyre Nichol’s home had had 13 visits.
Yeah, but any of us in that general category might be not too far from that sleep fogged dude stumbling into a SWAT team in NC, someday... :-(
I understand. Portnoy and I were discussing a different case altogether.
Funny you should say that. Portnoy and I were just discussing that. see post 385 and go back.
RE: all local law enforcement officers are but a representation of the people in the community they work for.
True. It has the depressing ramifications of ——
“The government you elect is the government you deserve.” —Thomas Jefferson.
Yes.
New life for the Memphis cops....
“This is your cell mate Jerome ‘Blade’ Mudge. Got his nickname when he worked for Rada Cutlery in Waverly, Iowa. Fashioned the sharpest slicing blades in the world.”
You’re right to mention the inactive EMTs. Were they threatened with “stand down, you guys, we’re handling this, we’ll let you know when to take over?”
They usually are serious and trying to shave seconds off of actions to save someone, as I had the misfortune to see firsthand.
Very incomplete story. Dude had the cops robot / camera and it was still broadcasting!
Wife’s demeanor tends to put neighbor’s call in some doubt.
And speaking of doubt, heck, put a flashbang or two through the window(s) right off the bat if you think there’s some threat inside.
Horrible police work... Who trained these cops, recent returnees from Fallujah?
Yeah, I just now added further comment.
To clarify, “who trained these cops, then recent returnees from Fallujah?”
Wow. I forgot TJ said that.
I am very opposed to the “all cops are scum” refrain. Certainly these cops that beat that young man to death are scum, but do they represent all cops?
If they do, then they are a reflection on the scum that hired them. And the scum who voted for the scum that hired these scum cops in the first place.
It’s a downright shame that cops across the country have been defunded. A shame that cities like Memphis, Atlanta, Portland, Minneapolis and so many other places have allowed Antifa, BLM, black racism and anarchy forcing out good competent police officers leaving in place punks and thugs like these cops in Memphis.
Plus, the cops were all hefty guys and Nichols is (was) slight and had health problems.
In the video I saw, two were holding one of his hands behind his back. He could not put the second hand back there because one of the other cops was holding it on the ground in front of him. That hold was obscured by the bodies, but became apparent when they moved away from him.
He might not have wanted to be cuffed, but one of the cops was preventing him from complying. That part of the video will be shown to the jury many times.
