Five fired Memphis police officers were charged on Thursday with second-degree murder over the death of Tyre Nichols - who died three days after being beaten during a January 7 traffic stop.
Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, Desmond Mills, Jr., Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith, who are all black, are now in custody.
In addition to second degree murder the five were also charged with aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.
On Thursday afternoon DA Steve Mulroy briefed the press, saying his team had moved 'swiftly, but also fairly' to review the case that led to the charges against the five officers. He added that the police bodycam footage of the incident will be released sometime after 6pm Central Time on Friday.
Second-degree murder, described by the Memphis District Attorney as a 'knowing murder,' is punishable by 15 to 60 years in prison under Tennessee law.
All five former cops were detained on bonds of up to $350,000.
Court records don't list attorneys for Smith, Bean or Haley. Martin's lawyer, William Massey, confirmed that his client had turned himself in. He and Mills' lawyer, Blake Ballin, said they planned to discuss the charges at a news conference later Thursday.
Nichols, a 29-year-old FedEx driver, was pulled over on January 7 by the Memphis police for what was initially reported as reckless driving.
That interaction led to a violent confrontation that put him in the hospital, where he would die three days later (January 10) due to 'extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating,' according to preliminary results of an autopsy commissioned by attorneys for his family.
He reportedly suffered cardiac arrest and kidney failure following the allegedly brutal interaction with the officers.

There can be issues with Prison staff although quite a few are decent people just trying to do their job and these federal prisons pay very well and rural areas
I hope that it is not as bad as it sounds but I fear it is.
And if it is more people are going to try their best to get away from the police and that will not end well.

Well you can tell from the pictures that unless he fell down and started beating his head into the pavement on purpose that these guys beat the absolute shit out of him I mean those pictures tell the whole story and that’s what he died from brain trauma I don’t know what makes people do that
As I’ve stated here before when I was 18 years old barely 18 years old I’d beat someone very badly with my first one they were on the ground and reasonably defenseless and I ended up on my knees my hands and arms covered in his blood like id just gutted a buck ..praying outloud in front of my friends for his life and I don’t want to ever go through that again nor do I want to do that didn’t want to go even though not much chance of it now at age 65 the The added bad part was that many people never looked at me the same way again especially girls I have grown up with and I’m not gonna lie that hurt
So my point being how could five men armed with batons I assume beat someone in the head bad enough to do that I just don’t get it it’s a viciousness No different from the people they are supposed to protect us from pretty pathetic if you think about it and I feel terrible for the kids family contrary to the usual bullshit these black families say this kid actually did seem like he was fairly OK
Someone did that to my kid I don’t know what I would do but I know what my inclinations would be you have to be very careful about that

I was in an Army uniform on the weekend of July 4th, 1978, in Memphis, during the Fireman’s Riots. Our meeting place was in sight of Orange Mound. We were issued weapons with no ammunition and were shot at repeatedly all over town. Since Memphis is now over 80% black I suspect that the NG and LE is going to have their hands full. IMO Memphis is lawless. I have said since that weekend that an enemy would not have to nuke Memphis...they would just have to hit nearby and the locals would do the rest.
I am curious how long these thug cops have been on the force, I think we will be seeing a lot more of this BECAUSE departments are going to be hiring ANYONE that is a warm body!! Anyone with half a brain wouldn’t THINK of becoming a cop after the way they have been demonized over the last few years, this is forcing department to lower their standards!! Dems ALWAYS end up instigating things that backfire completely!!!

Yes, but RD is one of those broad catchall terms. My father was cited for RD for blowing his horn at a police car that was driving well below the speed limit on a two lane road. (The charge was quashed)
