WASHINGTON — The story was as tawdry as they come: The president of the United States had been having sex with a former White House intern in the space off the Oval Office and now was being investigated for lying under oath and obstructing justice to cover it up.
The newspaper that landed on doorsteps around Washington that morning, 25 years ago Saturday, kicked off a furor that led to the first presidential impeachment trial in 130 years and transformed politics in the capital as President Bill Clinton battled for survival. A quarter-century later, the lessons are still being debated with each successive scandal.
The current White House imbroglio, while hardly as titillating or politically dangerous, is a case study in what today’s political actors took away from that unseemly-but-can’t-look-away episode. Some Democrats complain that President Biden’s team, now confronting a federal investigation, failed to heed the best practices drawn from the Clinton experience while others insist that it is, in critical ways, following the playbook.

The Drive By Media gave Slick Willy a pass. Even telling us that cheating on your wife is healthy. Same for lying.
We learned the media will cover for a Democrat no matter what. To defend Clinton, the press wrote articles on how powerful men require more sex.
It needs to be framed as workplace sexual harassment and theft. Of all the female volunteers, she was the only one transitioned to a paying Federal job. We all know the reason. He was using federal dollars to pay or sex.
Keep your dick in your pants and don’t wank off to 22 year old little girls in a D-cup.
NY Times doesn’t want to dig too deeply into what Brandon & Son have been up to - so they’ll rehash other Socialist Democrat ‘crimes of the past’ as a cover.
They don’t CARE about any ‘lessons learned.’ With Socialist Democrats it’s all about what you can get away with, not whether you have any moral standards to live by.
So transparent. So unexpected! *SNORT*
Oral sex went from not being sex, to practically being taught in school. Quite a legacy.
Big lesson: Democrats can lie and get away with it. The legacy media backs them up. Call it the “Carville strategy”.
I think the more impactful lesson came from the Whitewater Scandal.
Lie. Obfuscate. Drag it out. Make it so complicated people’s eyes glaze over.
Deny Deny Deny.
Then, it becomes “Old News”. And soon...anytime anyone is asked about it, the response is “We’ve been over all this before. There is nothing new. Next question.”
Of all the female volunteers, she was the only one transitioned to a paying Federal job
Really? that surprises me.
Yes, and it was the beginning of the end for the regular folks, people who couldn’t understand the complexities of government, but did understand that moral degradation was normal for powerful men….It took little time for the degradation to trickle down to all citizens….soon it was okay for all, even for schoolchildren. The Clintons have a lot to answer for. The evil they both exposed and perpetrated infected anll aspects of human life. We are bearing their legacy today in all aspects of human life.
Actually, the push was to get him for lying under oath in a rape trial. He signed a law as president that pattern of behavior can be used as motivation to commit the crime. That is why he had to lie about Miss Lewinski. The sexual assault trial has never been used as to why he had to lie; everyone forgets that is why he had to give a deposition - nothing to do with sex with an intern. He was accused of a violent crime and sex with the intern helped provide the context that was law that he had a history of behaving in this manner - justifying the charge and related evidence to convict if it went to trial. It was Grand Jury deposition
In the early days here we had the Clinton gang under a microscope.
There was one very obscure article that had a photo of the Oval Office with several folks in a meeting there.
There was a document on a nearby table that was the “cheat sheet” to the meeting.
It was a couple of pages long and the photo captured the contents.
It said “Scandals”.
The list included a dozen or so scandals that we knew about—and another couple of dozen that had names we did not know!
The claim that “the” “scandal” was about sex was and is a classic Deep State talking point to divert attention from everything else.
There are still many Clinton scandals that remain totally secret to this today.
My general sense of Bill Clinton lines up with George Will’s comment - “Bill Clinton was not the worst President we have ever had, but he is the worst person to ever have served as President.”
I know the NYT wants to look back and wonder why we bothered. My take is that Bill Clinton has never gotten what he deserved. On this and many other matters.
And furthermore, Al Gore would have been President in 2001 if only he had had the courage and integrity to have presented Clinton with an ultimatum in 1998 - either you resign or I will.
As long as people vote on party lines the president can do anything he wants. And if you have a long enough string of unbroken scandals people just stop caring.
This article is a LIE. clinton gave missile guidance technology to the chinese. This was the crime clinton committed. The was the coverup story the media used to keep the truth from the People
Started when a dipwad little girl asked him; Boxers or briefs?
As Snake head was fond of saying, it is all about sex, sex, sex.
Is it not Sexual Harassment? Even though an unpaid intern, she reported up through the chain to Clinton in the Executive Office.
