Justifying Attack on Social Security, House Republican Claims People ‘Want to Work Longer’
Alaska Native News ^ | Jan 16 2023 | Jake Johnson

Republican Rep. Rick Allen of Georgia suggested last week that he would support raising the Social Security retirement age—a policy change that would slash benefits across the board—because people have approached him and said they “actually want to work longer.”

Confronted by an advocate in the Capitol Building and asked how the GOP plans to cut Social Security, the congressman responded, “We’re not going to cut Social Security.”

But seconds later, Allen contradicted himself by expressing support for raising the retirement age, saying the move would “solve every one of these problems”—not specifying what the “problems” are from his perspective.

Maybe there really are seniors who have told Rep Allen that they “want to work longer.” Can he supply a list of companies that will hire people in their 60s? People may want to work till they’re 70 or older , as he seems to claim, but you need a willing employer in order to work. My observation is that employers start finding excuses to lay off older workers, not hire more of them

Is the House GOP really going to push for raising the Social Security age, so seniors will be too old to get hired - but not old enough to collect Social Security?

We used to call them The Stupid Party.

Now, it's obvious that they're The Backstab Party.

They like to do it. I guess they can’t make money from old people like they can with their contrived wars.

It has been shocking how many retired people I know have gone back to work, driven by boredom, inflation and just the desire to be more empowered.

I can retire in August but I have no idea what I would do.

He’s been drinking moonshine

NOONE has ever said that to him

IF you want to work longer you just do. No one is stopping you

I know quite a few people who retire, collect SS, and then go out and get another job so they have 2 incomes.

I do not want to work longer, but I am going to have to work because they’ve screwed up the economy so badly.

And if things actually crash...there’s a lot of Boomers who are going to be quite angry at losing everything.

The change in the retirement age for *full* Soc Sec benefits got phased in about 50 years ago, BTW.

Social Security is a classic Ponzi scheme:

https://moneymorning.com/2017/03/31/the-social-security-trust-fund-is-just-a-stack-of-ious-in-a-west-virginia-filing-cabinet/

Spending political capital to “fix” a Ponzi scheme is so stupid that only a Republican could want to do it.

There’s no where for them to work other than retail which isn’t a robust job market these days.

The job you can get at 65 is as door greeter at Walmart. No one wants to hire a 65 year old engineer

people dont "want" to work longer

they have to work longer to pay off the usery debt they stacked up

"Social Security" barely pays back enough for food and utilities. Even if you had a free place to live you need extra income

Social security is no where near enough to live on

besides , Zelenski needs the money

This proposal will result in only one thing: It will push more folks to the Democrat Party.

One could argue the merits of the proposal all day long. But folks pay into Social Security for their entire working careers. They expect the promise to be kept.

“Plenty of people work past retirement age”

Plenty of employers find ways to let go of older workers. Then, what employers will hire a 60-year-old job-seeker?

Rick Allen, proving the Democrat party case against Republicans; they do want to cut social security.

SS will collapse in about 10 years unless something is done so there is that.
