3 “For the 28 years that he served as chancellor of Germany, Bismarck preserved what he had built by a restrained and wise diplomacy, which was the single most important element in maintaining the peace of Europe.” – Henry Kissinger Some people complain I never have a good word to say about the United States. That’s not quite true. I am sure if I dig deep enough, I can find a piece or two from a daily column that spans more than a decade where I said something nice. But today, I will change tracks: George H.W. Bush, the 41st US president. The more I read about him, the more it seems to me he has been the most underrated president of the last century. Sadly, that tends to be the fate of one-term presidents.

The Bush that couldn’t remember where he was when jfk was assassinated? The one who was registered in a Dallas hotel on that day? The one who worked under CIA zapata operation? The one who sat on the sham jfk investigation? The one possibly photographed by book depository on that day? The one who became CIA director years later? The one who became liason to China? Yes - totally underrated.
How about his comment at the UN the new world order, scum begets scum
“Was that just a thin layer of veneer?”
Not in my opinion - I think he was simply a VERY NICE GUY. Same for his son, too.
The problem is, as Dennis Prager put it really well, is the person with the best background for being a role model for your kids (Obama runs circles around Trump, when it comes to being someone to emulate in your personal life), versus who is best to run the country (clearly Trump).
Bush was IDEAL as a personal role model - stayed married to a woman who ‘looked her age’, but wound up as a disaster when it came to standing up to Democrats.
Bush I = definition of milquetoast.
Bush I thought, finally, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the UN could fulfill its mission of promoting peace and human rights in the world.
In particular, neither Russia nor China vetoed the UN resolution authorizing the use of force to evict Iraq from Kuwait.
And, this UN resolution is what Bush asked Congress to approve.
Notice how limited was this resolution, merely to evict Iraq from Kuwait. You don’t f’n need the UN to authorize self-defense; or, to be aided by others in self-defense. But, Bush I was such a globalist he deferred self- and mutual-defense to the UN.
Or, maybe, he was taking a chance on cooperation by the great powers to invigorate the UN’s pursuit of peace and human rights in the world.
Well, Bush I was wrong.
Instead of bringing the reign of Saddam Hussein to an end, Bush I’s calling off the dogs when we had the bastards on the run, enabled Hussein to remain in power.
By remaining in power, Hussein continued to terrorize the people of his country, and we continued with sanctions that impoverished the country.
Later, with Bush II, we got into another war in Iraq, and then an occupation. We saw the rise of Al Qaida and then the rise of ISIS. Following an invasion of Iraq by ISIS, Iraq fell under the rule of Iran.
Bush I should be happy he’s “under-appreciated,” because if people focused on him, he would be recognized as having made one of the worse mistakes in U.S. history.
In war, said MacArthur, there is no substitute for victory. At a terrible cost, we totally defeated Japan. Then, MacArthur ruled Japan as military governor like a god. Over time, Japan was reconstructed as a prosperous and democratic country.
We might have accomplished such a thing in Iraq; but, no, Bush I chose a negotiated peace over victory.
If a war isn’t important enough to win, it shouldn’t be fought in the first place.

Just kidding, Merry Christmas.
Ross Perot lost the election for us. Never forget that.
Merry Christmas
Yes.
He lost me when he took office with his this will be a “kinder and gentler administration” speech. Well FU George, you start out by dissing Reagan, in effect making it clear you won’t continue his policies. That was my first thought when I heard it. I knew we were screwed, and I was right.
He was not loyal to Reagan, he was appointed by the Deep State to rein Reagan in.
I saw that coming when he told the GOP convention that he wanted "A kinder, gentler nation."
Actually Bush 1 was not a nice person. To those who worked for him, he was a rude, arrogant, mean spirited and demeaning individual. More like the stupid and lazy NCO I once had for a supervisor than a decent person.
It wasn’t just “read my lips”.. he was an evil globaloid lump of human $**t who was responsible for a great deal of global turmoil and suffering.
The Bushes fk’d America and the world good. Hopefully the POS is slow-burning, very painfully, in hell... where most Bushes should go.
They aren’t native Texans.
The Bush Crime Family are the wort backstabbers in history.
Great war hero...
But mediocre as president due to his surrender on taxes...
Overall, compared to the communist drivel from 1976-1980, 2008-2016, and 2030-2024, and the turncoat from 2000-2008, he was GREAT...
A kinder gentler machine-gun hand.
