The bitter cold accompanying this powerful winter storm broke some long-standing record lows for parts of Montana and Wyoming. Casper, Wyoming, saw its coldest day ever on Thursday as temps plummeted to a bone-chilling 42 degrees F below. It was also a Casper record for Dec. 22, with the old record of 33 below set in 1983. Other areas breaking records Thursday included Riverton, Wyoming, which dropped to 31 degrees below, shattering a 24-year record.

Around there we used engine block tank heaters. No problem except you had to watch out for all of the extension cords.

Time to dust off the old copy of “In Search Of: The Coming Ice Age.”

And I remember Russian scientists who were silenced when their studies and models predict a cooling trend and Russia preparing for a colder climate.

-40!!! Is it C or F?

That was F but it really doesn't matter. At that exact temperature, both scales are equal.

Cody is nice and all but there’s also a lot of drug abuse going on. Not as bad as California but you see the effects of meth quite a bit. Fentanyl is showing up too.

“Global warming can cause global cooling”

That’s right! It’s only cold because it’s so hot!!!

Poor critters. I visited West Yellowstone last May with friends. I hope they find a hot spring to stand near.

They’re leaving “wind” out of the equation..

Sure makes a difference when heating a home, that's for sure. I think it's easier to heat a house when it's 20 below with no wind chill effect then it's equivalent of 5 above with a 30 MPH wind. Feels that way, too!

My furnace is running overtime...You’re right...that wind does make a huge difference. I just boiled a pot of water for half an hour to raise the humidity...45% is nice. Makes my apartment much more comfortable.

Engineers call that “forced convective heat transfer.”

Air currents do carry away a lot more heat that areas with quiet air. Quiet air is called “natural convection” and the heat transfer coefficients are a lot lower.

We have climate change which is the result of all the Volcanic particulate and gas pumped into the atmosphere in the last year. Bunch of eruptions! One day of LaPalma probably = a year of man made emmissions.

FWIW, right now it's 5 degrees here in S.E. Michigan with winds gusting maybe 30 - 40 MPH over the night. Fortunately very little snow.

Yesterday morning the temps dropped from 35 degrees and rain at about 2:00 a.m. to 8 degrees and blowing snow at about 9:00 a.m.

I didn't have to leave the house but I have to believe the rain and sudden drop in temps probably made the roads a nightmare.

When temps drop below 17 degrees, the salt and brine they put down on the roads has very little effect.

Yes! That short story from middle school is one of the few to stick with me all these years. You pegged it.
