Mike Lee, Title 42 drama holds up omnibus passage

An effort led by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) to maintain Title 42 is threatening efforts to pass a sweeping government funding bill before a shutdown deadline later this week.

Congressional negotiators on both sides say the biggest holdup is ongoing negotiations to decide what the voting threshold would be to pass the amendment.

Lee’s amendment to the bipartisan deal would cut funding for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s office unless the Biden administration reinstates the border control policy known as Title 42, a Trump-era policy that allows for migrants to be quickly expelled at the border without asylum processing.

The administration may not be able to fully reinstate the policy, as its permanence is currently under review by the Supreme Court, after having been found illegal by a federal judge.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), chair of the Senate Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee, took aim at the push, while raising concerns about its chances of passing a Democratic-led House.

“We have a difference of opinion on immigration policy. We’re not going to solve that in this budget,” he told reporters late Wednesday. “And to let that disagreement take down aid to Ukraine to keep people alive during a cold winter, especially tonight, is pretty unthinkable.”

Title 42 was due to end Wednesday, but a group of GOP-led states successfully got Chief Justice John Roberts to delay that sunset on Monday.

What happened to the “stay in Mexico” policy? I don’t think its the same as Title 42.

Good. Anything to push this into next year. This bills soul intent is to neuter the incoming Republican House. It should die right here.

Good. Hopefully it will cause a lot of RINO’s to think twice about moving forward with this monstrosity. Maybe even Cornyn.

There is a reason that the Democrats didn't run anyone against Mike Lee and supported the "independent" candidate Egg McMuffin, former CIA.

FWIW, Mexico is suffering a labor shortage as well. I work for an international company that has three large production plants there and will willingly hire the northbound Central Americans for two qualifications: (a)An 8th grade education or equivalent and (b)A willingness to work. The fact that they would rather keep going north and crash the border speaks volumes.

Acting tough so he can bring in more foreigners on work visas. Lee will get that included into something for this effort to appear strong.

Well, I’d like them to hold it up AND and insist on border wall funding, immigration policy, balanced budget, etc.

Turtle McConnell said that Ukraine was the most important thing to all Americans, so Title 42 shouldn’t hold up the Deep State Omnibus package. Biden should say that he would gladly sign it...Jeremiah 15:13

As far as I have seen, the bill specifically prohibits border wall funding or any other positive outcome.

That's what I've heard as well. Just more money to process more illegals more quickly.

Need to add as much delay as possible. Right to Dec 31st. Ensure this excrement sandwich expires without passage. The new GOP majority House can have a go at a proper budget without all of the RAT pork.

"The calendar shows the Senate reconvening today,"

My bad - I assumed Wednesday was the last day of the session. Bummer.

Sorry, even keeping title 42 in place is no excuse to pass the pig. The only appropriate bill is a continuing resolution to fund the swamp through Jan-Feb and no more than that. The Dims will accept all kinds of “bipartisan” window dressing as long as the “heart and soul” of the $1.7+ trillion pig remains in place, but THAT is the more important problem - the heart and soul of the $1.7+ trillion pig.
