Over the last 70 or so years, declaring death has gotten progressively messier. Scientific advances such as ventilators and life support have made it harder and harder to find the line between being a person and being a body. Now, mind-blowing experiments in pigs, and the development of a souped-up life-support system called OrganEx, are reinvigorating a decades-old debate about how our lives end.

Yale neurobiologist Nenad Sestan researches genes that control how neurons grow and form connections in the developing brain. To perform these studies, he orders slices of tissue from brain banks around the world. Eight or nine years ago, a specimen from London missed the plane. The extra day it took to arrive was presumed to be catastrophic: Cells die after several minutes without oxygen. It’s one of the first things Sestan recalls learning in medical school.
But Sestan had already noticed that this wasn’t always the case. On several occasions, someone left a brain slab out a few extra hours before moving it into fluid for experiments, yet Sestan had still managed to recover living cells. So when the overdue brain arrived from London, Sestan asked one of his postdoctoral fellows to dissect a piece of it and let it grow in a petri dish containing cellular nutrients. “Maybe something will be there alive,” he said.
It worked; some cells grew. And then it worked again on a second brain the researchers sliced and recovered to make sure the results weren’t a fluke. Sestan started to wonder: If living cells could be preserved from a dead brain, why not try to revive the whole organ?
Using assorted pumps, heaters, and filters to circulate a custom-made blood substitute, Sestan and his coworkers cobbled together a now-patented perfusion system, which they called BrainEx.

I feel your pain. It was last year my daughter died unexpectedly of SIDS.
This analogy has helped me in my faith and grief. Hopefully, it will bring some peace to you and others that are hurting as well. It was something that just randomly came to me when I was debating the existence of God and why God would let such tragedy happen in this world with a friend who was an atheist at the time. I was reminded of my words when my daughter passed...
“When you drive a toddler for an errand, imagine they drop their favorite toy. They scream and cry and act like it is the end of the world. Meanwhile, you are driving and telling them
“CHILL DUDE. WE WILL BE HOME IN 5 MINUTES!!!”
But they continue to cry the whole way back home. The problem is for a toddler 5 minutes is a lifetime. They don’t yet have the perspective of 30,40,50, 90 years.
When we lose someone so special, when God doesn’t answer our prayer, when we feel things are so unfair: we cry, beg, become get frustrated, sad, and/or angry with God.
BUT... just as the toddler does not have the perspective of this world, in the same way 5 minutes seems like forever to them... We lack the perspective of eternity. We cannot yet comprehend how short this life is.
So while we scream, cry, and beg; God is in that driver’s seat saying ....
“CHILL DUDE, YOU WILL BE HOME IN LIKE 5 MINUTES”!
❤️❤️❤️
None of this counts unless I can transfer my consciousness into a computer.
I worked with a woman, a full blood Cherokee raised on the reservation. She went into trance and told me the details during her major surgery. She even followed the Dr into the next room and told me the phone number the Dr called, all while she was under general anesthesia.
I know of several things like you wrote. No need to tell the story but life goes on, and the recently deceased often send a “signal”.
Just felt it proper to ping you all to a post about Abby Normal’s brain.
Paul tells us that we have a body, a soul/behavior mechanism, and a spirit. He even emphasizes the notion by telling us that if there is a physical body there is a spirit body. What dies is enguklfed in the four variable spacetime of the body and perception abilities. The spirit, being of higher order variables is not sequestered in the same time swamp as the physical 4D body. The Bible indicates that the spirit continues to exist either trapped witht he behavior mechanism in trespasses and sins, OR separated from the soul by God, to be with the Lord in Heaven awaiting a new glorified body and soul which is sinless.
It has been proven that the gestating child can learn as early as justy 22-24 weeks since conception. The studies used the startle reflex, proving repetition of a startling sound got a jerk from the child, except where the sound was repeated often enough that the child no longer was startled when it heard the sound.
Excellent post, MHG.
I have had out of body experience. Not particularly pleasing, imho. I hope it’s nicer at death. There was an urgency to get “back inside” my body.
A serious answer.
A young man had a Dr verdict of leukemia and no cure.
One night he thought he was dying.. Life seemed to leave his body.
He did not die.. He was instantly in a place of peace and not afraid.
He saw loved ones and talked to many. They looked like they did on earth.
He saw many in the distance. The ones he talked to were encouraging and love all around.
He saw the hands of Jesus outstretched.. He wanted to stay but he thought of his wife alone and it seemed thus was not the final stay.
His wife saw him on the floor.. Tears.. Abs the young man was changed forever. The Lord took him to glory some months later.
He had no fear and he knew where he was going.
There are so many books about surviving death and out of body experiences.
Life After Life by Dr. Raymond A. Moody Jr. is a great start on this subject. He is considered the ‘Father’ of the NDE Near Death Experience.
His latest book is called Glimpses of Eternity.
I had read some material that brains might last up to 20 minutes as still alive.
That made me wonder if then it was possible whether a person might still be hearing what was being said after so called death and there was some conscious still going on.
C.S. Lewis made that a main plot element in one of his science fiction novels.
I heard the hearing is the last thing to go. If it lasts for 20 minutes, I wonder what some people have heard.
May we all have such faith in the end...
Great scene.
Raymond coined the term NDE.
Bruce Greyson and Ken Ring started IANDS, The International Association of Near Death Experiences many years ago. Bruce is a psychiatrist and headed the Department of Perceptual Studies at UVA Charlottesville. Formerly this was headed by Ian Stevenson.
Jim Tucker MD now has the Chair at UVA since Bruce retired.
Gary Schwartz does similar work at the University of Arizona, Tuscon where he heads their Consciousness Research Lab.
I’ve known Raymond, Bruce, Jim, and Gary for many years. All of them have numerous books on the subject.
As an experiencer, I chose a different route. It’s all about the experience and the intellect of a non-experiencer is not sufficient to understand the process. It’s like defining Love to a person that never felt it. They just don’t get it.
The experience gave me a taste of something that I desired again. There is not a day in the over 30 years since I died that I don’t don’t want to return to being fully aware and experiencing God. I not only do not fear death, I welcome it.
That being said, I was sent back for some reason. I have no personal mission in life and find myself more of an observer than active participant.
What I found was that by shifting our consciousness the greater reality perceived after death is available to us whie we are still in our physical bodies. Jesus taught us how to do this through Him.
When you make this shift in consciousness, consciousness and the human soul becomes physical to your perception. This is how I am able to read people’s souls in detail. The stored memories of people’s experiences in life back to conception and beyond became physical and directly observable by me. It’s as much a curse as a blessing, as I also feel the pain and suffering attached to people’s stored memories, both emotional and physical.
Society is about to go through a very difficult experience. Most Freepers see the writing on the wall. I doubt that the USA Government or our currency will make it through this turmoil. From a human level, I see the pain and suffering on deck.
From a higher perspective, above the level of good and evil, this is a wonderful growing experience for the human souls on earth. The ego bubbles are about to be crushed, a prerequisite to the transcendent experience created by the shift in consciousness necessary to perceive directly with our consciousness beyond our physical bodies.
Jesus is already here on earth. But not in the form that a non-transcended soul can directly perceive. This is why He mentions that like the lightning in the east that is seen in the west, so will He be when He returns. ( Matthew 24:27)
Things that should not have been said at times I am sure.
