Oregon looks to create first-in-nation universal health care plan

The chair of a legislative task force presented a plan to a panel of Oregon lawmakers Thursday at the state Capitol that would fundamentally change health care insurance in Oregon and create a public system that would provide coverage for every person in the state.

Dr. Bruce Goldberg told the members of the Senate Interim Committee on Health Care that the proposed new program would cost less than the current health insurance system and would eliminate deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, and other out-of-pocket costs for those covered by the state program.

“This plan removes obstacles that currently exists for equitable care. Everyone gets the same benefit. No longer do some people get some things and other people don’t get other things,” he said.

in 2019. Its purpose was to provide recommendations for a first-in-the-nation single-payer health care system to cover all Oregonians. Since then, it has held multiple meetings and forums, led by Goldberg, to hash out ideas and collect public comment.

The end result of the task force’s work was a 223-page report with recommendations the task force approved in September.

Separately, in November, Oregon voters approved Measure 111, which established a right to health care in the state’s Constitution. But that measure did not set up a system.

Wasn’t this tried in Massachusetts? Fail https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hbss-christensen-why-universal-health-care-failed-in-massachusetts/

Tried in Vermont? Fail

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/why-vermonts-single-payer-effort-failed-and-what-democrats-can-learn-from-it/2019/04/29/c9789018-3ab8-11e9-a2cd-307b06d0257b_story.html

Democrats only learn how to lie, cheat, steal and line the pockets of themselves and their friends, through ridiculous government programs, grants, charities and non-profits.

These people never took Economics and Calculus to figure out social programs benefits are not in number of people served or dollars spent in one economic, but the area under the outcome curves of both private and public spending.

Our lifetimes expanded by decades with simple health care. Or lifetimes expand slowly with expensive healthcare. Expensive goverment delivered healthcare might be useful for those over 60, they could be simple wellness projects for those not drug addicted under 60.

Simplest way to make poor people healthy, get them out of being poor with job training and making urban areas affordable.

need an mri? how about 2024 is more like it. and if your cancer spreads and you die?? , its a win for the government, they dont have to pay for the mri or your cancer treatments.

hand over my heart . .this is the bottom line of how universal health care works . bottom line. no lie.

The death count and ill-health-count will go up significantly once they do that stupid idea.

Who in their right mind thinks stupid idiotic government is good at medicine or a good doctor? Government is not only stupid but has their own agenda which has nothing to do with your well-being but has everything to do with getting your money.

I do agree with your premise, but for:
- Oregon has pushed industry, timber harvesting, and mining out of the State.
- many of the 'poor' do not want 40 hour-a-week jobs.

Finally, Portland baristas do not generate enough taxes to support universal health care.

We've all seen that there is no equitable healthcare, because someone is always making a decision as to who gets it and when a person gets it.

That's subjective healthcare, just as much as being able to afford medical care is. Only no person is making the decision in the payment system. The ability to pay is making that decision.

Both are wrought with inequities, as some will receive treatment, while others will be denied treatment or treatment may be delayed based upon a person's decision, or the money/insurance they have at their disposal.

Even if everyone had insurance, the insurance company may play a role in that decision process. If the insurance provide is a single provider entity, then decisions will absolutely become a factor in healthcare delivery.

There is no way to level the playing field while still maintaining the highest levels of care.

Doctors are yet another stumbling block for equitable care, as some doctors are more capable than others, and no doctor is perfect every time someone goes under his scalpel. So, doctor availability & timing become issues in receiving equitable healthcare.

Equitable is nothing more than an illusion at best, or a fraud at worse.

It's a fraud when it is perpetrated by someone for their own selfish gains.

It's an illusion when someone's ignorance is allowed to be employed in the belief equity can achieve be achieved when the reality is that it is not possible no matter how sincere their intentions may be.

Either way the attempts should be outlawed or at least rejected by people.

He’s now working on a “reparations” plan that will give $223,000 in taxpayer money to every black Californian. That’s his new gimmick. It will cost at least $500 billion.

I can’t wait to apply for “reparations” as I identify as a wage slave ;-)

This is not a first. This has been tried before. But you’ve got to ask yourself a couple of questions:

This all comes down to cost. So what treatments are affordable and who makes the decisions as to their cost and probability? It can’t be doctors as unless they can lose money, they are full steam ahead. It can’t be politicians as they are still trying to keep their votes next time. It can’t be the patients as they will break the bank for their personal needs. There isn’t anyone that can be put in the “open” to take heat they will undoubtedly get. So it will have to be some bean counters hidden somewhere that can make decisions based strictly upon cost.

We are currently working with a system just like this that has the advantage of social security and Medicare funds to make it stay alive. It’s called the affordable care act (which isn’t).

Now the real trigger is when someone at 80 years old needs a procedure that the bean counters refuse because the patient isn’t worthy due to age, or other illness that might cut their lives short even by measuring it in years. If enough bean counters got a lousy lunch and have indigestion, how many patients will die since the counters are invisible but are the targeted passed along screw ups?

The worm can is open for business. It didn’t work before, it won’t again.

Only someone with an IQ lower than about 40 believes this will actually work as advertised. Anyone else they says this will work is lying, hoping to get rich off it somehow.

All vaccines will be required and you will have to check certain boxes. Old white males who don’t drink the koolaid will be left out in the cold.

Dr. Oz stated that when you mix medicine and politics, you get politics.

This is another initiative petition voted into law. If the PTB approve, it will not face much judicial push-back. Get a fairly small number of signatures on petitions, put it on the ballot in a midterm election...voila! Democracy!

Yes, but the people of Portland voted for this. Don’t feel sorry for them, because they asked for it.

From each according to his means and to each according to his need.

The only same in this is the equally watered down care. The big difference is of course nobody gets what they PAY for. The guy who pays all the bills gets the same as the guy who pays NOTHING at all.

Wonderful system eh?
