Thursday, FNC’s Tucker Carlson was critical of the prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russian governments that gave the United States Brittney Griner in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Carlson suggested Griner was the beneficiary because Paul Whelan, another American imprisoned in Russia, was a Trump voter.
“So, at this point, we can assume the obvious,” Carlson said. “The Biden administration chose Brittney Griner over Paul Whelan. The basketball player over the Marine facing 16 years. There was only room for one in the lifeboat, and the Marine got left behind. Well, why did they make that choice? Well, you should know that Whelan is a Trump voter, and he made the mistake of saying so on social media. He’s paying the price for that now. Brittney Griner is not. She’s got very different politics. Brittney Griner despises the United States. She’s been very vocal about that.”

Paul Nicholas Whelan is a Canadian-born former United States Marine with U.S., British, Irish, and Canadian citizenship. He was arrested in Russia on December 28, 2018, and accused of spying. On June 15, 2020, he received a 16-year prison sentence.
Whelan got a Big Chicken Dinner from Uncle Sam.
Trump did nothing for Whelan while in office.
That was irrelevant. Black lesbian America hater vs old white dude. Choice was a no brainer.
Yes, he was court-martialed and discharged from the Marines for bad conduct: Court Document
A long time ago... We don't know the details.
That is an absolute lie.
I’m curious as to your motives in telling it.
And of course feel free to try to defend it.
Hw’s peobably got it better than the political prisoners in the DC gulag.
I noted from Biden’s spiel that the standards he applied to the Griner exchange do NOT apply to those J9 political prisoners STILL incarcerated without trials.
“Didn’t Whelan get in trouble in 2008 or something?”
Whelan has not been in Russian jail since 2008, I think it was more like 2018 when he was jailed.
If he was dawn leemon he’d be home already. Being a bipoc, gay, branDUHn supporter has it’s perks.
Which are you stating is the lie? That Whelan got a BCD; or that Trump did nothing for him while in office?
The Biden administration chose Brittney Griner a hate America gay person Biden’s kind of people.
You don’t know that
Probably not
Trump did nothing.
Trump did nothing.

Okay. What did Trump do?
I posted this yesterday to someone else, but it applies here:
“I challenge you to find and post up here anything Trump had to say about Paul Whelan during his presidency other than “Yeah, we’re looking into that”.
Trump stated that in response to a reporter’s shouted question as he was boarding Marine One, a couple days after Whelan was first arrested.
After a court-martial conviction in January 2008 on multiple counts “related to larceny”, he was sentenced to 60 days restriction, reduction to pay grade E-4, and a bad conduct discharge
Detroit Free Press in 2019:
A Trump administration official said Thursday afternoon that it “has been and continues to be actively engaged with Paul Whelan’s case,” pointing to Bolton’s meeting with Elizabeth Whelan and his tweet.
A State Department official told the Free Press that consular officers were at Whelan’s hearing Thursday, too.
“We will continue to monitor Mr. Whelan’s case closely and to press for fair and humane treatment, due process, and access to appropriate medical care,” a State Department spokesman said. “We take allegations of mistreatment seriously, and will continue to raise Mr. Whelan’s case at every opportunity. The department has no higher priority than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad. We urge the Russian government to guarantee a fair and transparent judicial process without undue delay, in accordance with its international legal obligations.
“The department remains in regular contact with the Whelan family. On June 13, Consular officials conducted the embassy’s ninth prison visit to Mr. Whelan since he was first detained.”
. . .
“We have been working on this case for six months already and we didn’t see any real evidence. We tried to convince the court today to change the detention to house arrest. Paul said his position to the judge (that he is innocent), but everything was in vain.”
John Bolton spoke out against whelans detention repeatedly as a member of the Trump administration.
