~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

I know I shouldn't be a buttinsky on your conversation there, Kathy, but I'm going to anyway.   Do your plow people ever go around aiming for your mailboxes there?

We once lived in a place (not Alaska) where the plow guys came around and I think actually aimed for peoples' mailboxes, to plow them down.   (They once knocked ours down there, and later the city replaced it, but we had had a really good (pretty) one there, and they replaced it with a lousy, cheap, ugly one!)

We all ended up there having to put all kinds of reflectors around the mailboxes, and little boards to block the plowed snow, etc.   (I think they were just resentful that they had to get up at three in the morning to plow the streets, and they took it out on our mailboxes at the time!   I think they might have taken a swig or two along the way too!)

I imagine ALL the plow guys throughout the city are busting their butts and have been the past 24 hours. No way to keep up with it while it was coming down so hard. Now with the lull they can maybe start catching up and get the roads cleared. There were snow plows small and large hustling and bustling all around the airports all day.
I just made a quick run through several of the downtown cams and the main streets are in decent shape. Time for all the guys to hit the rest of the streets so y’all can get out. There’s no way you’re getting out on your own tomorrow!

I hope the radar’s telling the truth this time and you ARE getting a little rain, at least.

I’m not eeeeeven thinking ahead to spring right now. I’m grateful for the rain so we don’t have wildfires. I don’t know how we got through the fall without the whole state turning into an inferno, we were so dry. There were fires but apparently none got too out of hand. Whew!

You’re welcome. I admire his dedication especially at his age. Oh, the stories he can tell.

Well, I checked my credit card account this morning and saw that I got a credit which put me above my credit limit. apparently one of the places that got hit with this problem saw what happened and gave me a credit so I'm back in the black for now.

But yep, we had a great visit to Wichita Ridge yesterday. Here are the pics.

Glad things are squared away with your card.

It looks like Gizmo did a lot of exploring, dragging you along the way. LOL

It’s looking a bit soggy over there tonight. I hope the rain moves out by the time you’re ready to head out to the lake later.
