House passes measure to avert railroad strike

The House on Wednesday passed a measure that would avert a national railroad strike by forcing the adoption of a tentative labor agreement.

The vote was 290 to 137.

House members also voted 221-207 to approve a separate proposal to provide railroad workers with seven days of paid sick leave, with Democrats in favor and nearly all Republicans opposed. Both measures now go to the Senate.

A 1926 law gave Congress the power to intervene in railroad disputes that threaten to disrupt the economy. President Joe Biden on Monday called on Congress to step in–despite his usual pro-labor, pro-union stance–saying, “a rail shutdown would devastate our economy,” including putting as many as 765,000 Americans out of work within the first two weeks.

A national rail strike would idle 30% of the nation’s freight and could potentially cost $2 billion a day.

"Union Joe", the Basement Potato, backstabs his union buddies.

Like to see how they are going to enforce it.

Not like there are thousands of railroad trained employees just sitting around waiting to be hired.

Also, there will be extreme blowback from this.

“I’m the most pro union President in history.”

Yup.

I wonder what’s in this, for them.

“Not like there are thousands of railroad trained employees just sitting around waiting to be hired.”

Doesn’t sound as difficult as when Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers. The media meltdown over that one was something to see.

I live in PA...

I don’t mean they’ll vote R, I just mean someone is going to pay for taking the union’s power to strike away.
Slow downs, sick outs, “things get broken”, etc.

I think under the RLA, union members can still strike even if Congress does something. Enforcement will be a bitch. It would be a shame if Enforcers were severely damaged.

Not sure how steadfast railroad union members are. Doubt they roll over, but they may bend over for Joey.

8 of the 12 unions voted to accept the deal that was negotiated in September.

If the remaining four try to pull any stunts after a settlement gets forced on them, the legal trouble they would face will only be one of their problems.

“Sold out the unions”

What’s left of them, which isn’t much compared to the good old days. Nobody gets out of BidenWorld unscathed.

“The percentage of workers belonging to a union (or total labor union “density”) varies by country. In 2019 it was 10.3% in the United States, compared to 20.1% in 1983.”

“Sold out the unions”
Why not? Both he and the Uniparty are in the gravy and will be there at least as long as The Party was in power in Russian & China and Cuba and Venezuela and on and on.
Only the grim reaper will remove them from their swamp lairs.

Has anyone ever said Joe Biden was “Pro-Union” or “Pro-labor” besides Joe himself?

I’d hope so, but the voting base is ignorant, highly impressionable, and has a memory that’s no longer than the current news cycle.

8 of the 12 unions endorsed the extremely generous deal. 4 cried, and are trying to kill the golden goose.
Pinkos give in.
Thankfully I’m in a decent union. We know our worth and so does the company I work for. No one gets out of hand.
