San Francisco police have come up with a new policy allowing them to kill suspects using robots – a first for the city and a potential milestone in law enforcement’s deepening relationship with machines.
The policy, part of a broader set of rules around use of law enforcement equipment, is set to go before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, Nov. 29, Mission Local reported.
Robots under the policy would “only be used as a deadly force option when risk of loss of life to members of the public or officers is imminent and outweighs any other force option available.” Police could use robots while apprehending suspects, during “critical incidents,” and while executing warrants, the policy states.

Oh great. Now robots will be racist.
I’m a Blade Runner.
I “retire” them.
I doubt anyone except policemen’s wives approve of robocops ... but it’s coming.
San Francisco is probably as good as place as any to test out "ROBONATOR-TERMICOP"
I believe a robot was used to kill a copkiller in Texas, but that robot was being operated remotely by a human.
I can see the use of manually-operated robots being okay, whereas autonomous robots making their own decisions about if/when to shoot being very bad.
Been done, Dallas.
Dead or Alive you’re coming with me
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords!
The Three Laws of Robotics (Isaac Azimov): A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Skinner!...
P.S. Can I borrow an 80’s Sean Young and a current Ana de Armas?
ED-209
A better use for them would be to clean up the excrement and needles.
If they are used to kill, then it’s only a matter of time before they are used to kill dissenters.
Maybe they should start small with, say, pooper scooper robots.
Test the waters, baby steps, etc.
Robocop.
The movie.
The reality.
The important question is not whether robots can kill, but whether autonomous robots can kill.

Well that’s a good point. If it’s operating under human control and the human is making the decisions, then it’s really more of a tool than a robot.
Hey if daylight savings time can be racis’, so can robo cop!
I used to think when I was a kid, what if a super computer logically and unemotionally examined all crime data and came to the conclusion “keep all blacks in prison” “establish strict racial segregation to keep black criminals from attacking or robbing whites and Asians” and so on.
Is the computer in the brain of the robocop or offstage somewhere going to permit only shooting non persons of color? Also inquiring into their dysfunctional family upbrnging? And making sure the perp is armed and facing them?
There is already a system in cities which detects the sound of gunfire and zeroes in on the location. Blacks have attempted to get these shut down as “racist” since the places where inhabited by, you know, and the shooters were, you know, so, you know.
Called ShotSpotter gunshot detection system. “Precision policing solutions that help save lives, deter crime, and make communities safer.”
