From 1,800 feet in the air, the pilot of this tiny, four-seater plane points to a stretch of land marked by a smattering of farms and one arterial road.
“That’s the Wisconsin border,” he says. “Doesn’t look like much from up here.”
But that sliver of land now marks a barrier between legal and illegal abortion care after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
The pilot is part of a growing network of pilots who, through a fledgling Illinois nonprofit, are volunteering time, equipment and expertise to help connect people with abortion care. But there are risks, too, from antagonism and harassment from anti-abortion groups to potential legal threats, which is why the pilot asked that his name not be used in this story.
“Pilots take tremendous pride in the freedom we have to fly,” he says. “I can fly anywhere I want to. I don’t have to file a flight plan. I don’t have to talk to air traffic control. It felt right to use these freedoms to help someone whose freedoms are being threatened.”

If flying is bad for the environment unless it’s to help abort a baby ... you might be a Democrat.
Good grief.
The insanity rages the decision was a live and let live decision one state does the Pro-Life law the other state does the Pro-Choice law.
Those who rage about the Supreme Court decision on abortion law returning it to the states threaten the unity of our nation.
“abortion care”
There’s no “care” in abortion care.
Just curious -- that's a very sweeping statement. Is it true?
Funny, thats how I feel about being able to shoot criminals...
The lengths people will go to to kill a child amaze me.
Really a publicity stunt. Buying a bus ticket works better.
About forty years ago I was listening to the abortion debate and predicted that soon we would have cruise ship abortions.
NO it is NOT true.
He cannot fly into a Restricted Area - like around the White House, or Area 51, or some military bases - and there are hundreds of them around the nation.
It’s an exaggeration and oversimplification.
If you follow the rules of classified airspace, yes.
He should try that in the Gulf of Mexico, south of Fort Walton Beach, FL.
three words: range, weapons, testing
It'd be a real shame if there were a misfire...a REAL shame.
The above interview is of her book "Refugee High", which deals with refugees in America and suggests that we ignore our growing xenophobia at our peril, for these students are creative, resilient, adaptive, and caring. Her book is also a shout-out to the lasting value of public education. Refugee High showcases a school that not only serves as a welcoming landing pad for immigrants and refugees, but also as a launching pad for talented, productive, future generations of Americans.
In other words, another stupid individual who is deemed as being among the intelligent in today's world. 😋
Abortion care? Oxymoron.
The Bible says, woe to them that call evil, “good”...
Yes, it’s true. Under Visual Flight Rules, as long as he avoids uncontrolled airpspace, he doesn’t have to talk to anyone. If you land at an untowered or unmanned towered airfield, you need to make advisory calls for safety and coordination, but not ATC.
No VFR flight plan filing is required. VFR fligt plans are a good idea as they are the primary source to begin search and rescue and to determine if an aircraft is overdue (i.e. didn’t make it to where they were going...crashed).
“I can fly drive anywhere I want to. I don’t have to file a flight driving plan. I don’t have to talk to air traffic control anyone ."
So he's attention seeking because he flies a plane?
Does his insurer know that he's providing medical flights?
Will he be liable if there's a complication with the abortion he delivers a woman to?
