Homes are collapsing on the Florida coast amid Tropical Storm Nicole. Here’s what’s behind the dangerous situation
CNN ^

Posted on 11/10/2022 9:03:56 AM PST by FarCenter

Three main factors are contributing to the dangerous situation on the coast.

Nicole’s storm surge, which peaked at around 6 feet Thursday morning, is significant because of how massive the storm was as it approached Florida on Wednesday, with tropical-storm-force winds stretching for more than 500 miles.

That storm surge pushed ashore on top of exceptionally high tides associated with this week’s full moon.

And behind it all, sea level in this part of Florida has risen more than a foot in the past 100 years, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and most of that rise has occurred in the past three decades.

Mostly because the homes were built too close to the ocean.

It’s normal and those homes will all be rebuilt - again.

It goes up in some places and down and others. That’s because the Earth itself is rising and falling relative to the Sea which stays constant.

A few years ago I saw an article that claimed sea level had risen at Boston. I pictured a hill of water just off our coast here. I never saw it though, so I guess the hill of water went away. Maybe it moved to Florida.

"And behind it all, sea level in this part of Florida has risen more than a foot in the past 100 years,..."

While they are attempting to blame climate change causing the seal level to rise, that it is uneven shows that it is part of the shift of ocean currents.

It is more about ocean currents causing what are essentially standing waves. A similar thing is happening in the Chesapeake Bay area. These things slowly shift around and even irregularly oscillate.

Right. Exactly how does that happen?

“ sea level in this part of Florida has risen more than a foot in the past 100 years, ”

Very much doubt it.
However the number of homes has exploded.
Homes sit in areas that was open space 30 years ago .

Same thing with California or Colorado wildfires.
Fires have always burned, but what was rangeland 30 years ago, now has 500 homes.
So yes more damage now.

No, the sea level has not risen. The ground level has subsided, mostly due to pumping out groundwater.

“...that it is uneven shows that it is part of the shift of ocean currents.”

That’s because the white moon is racist, raising the sea level differently for some areas. Don’t argue with the science infidel!

A bunch of one and two story type V single-family houses. Not exactly the most difficult types of structures to repair or replace.

And sea levels have been rising more or less continuously since the end of the last ice age 10k years ago.

We have the civil engineering skills to manage this all just fine.

“sea level in this part of Florida has risen more than a foot in the past 100 years”

Yeah, that got to me too. So the sea level went up on this part of the Florida coast and not other parts. It is more likely the land sunk.
