A battalion commander is forbidding soldiers under his command from wearing their Army-issued fleece jackets while on a rotation in South Korea, where local average temperatures during the winter frequently dip below freezing.

"The fleece cold weather jacket is not authorized for wear as an outer garment," Lt. Col. Geoffrey Lynch, commander of 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, said in an August memo reviewed by Military.com.

Looking at the picture in the link, it doesn’t look like a jacket to me. It looks like a jacket liner.

It must clash with the lipstick and high heels color.

A cold soldier is a demoralized soldier.

More hamstringing and degradation of our armed forces.

Spit.

Power tripping. “Because I say so!”
There’s a place for compliance in the military, but the temptation is to derive deep pleasure from (virtually) Crackin’ the Whip and seeing all these people jump at your command.

I was in the Army in Virginia 1966. One morning when it was cold a lot of us wore our field jackets. The First Sargent informed us we were out of uniform because we haven’t received orders from Washington allowing us to wear field jackets...The next morning everyone was out of uniform wearing field jackets.

My daughter, (she grew up in north Idaho), shared her personal basic cold weather gear, glove liners, wool socks, etc., during her winter TBS (Marines). She was amazed at how training was not prepared or understood how to deal with cold weather.

May be a little severe to trannys. They take those hormone shots and loose all their subcutaneous fat.

If it gets cold enough, people would use it as a jacket liner for the jacket. In cool temps, thats when people may want to wear it as outerwear.

“He believed that warm, dry soldiers were the first to die in a firefight.”

I have spent a fair amount of time in a poncho. Never would have described myself as “warm and dry”.

And that is why I did my 5 years and left the Navy. Too many jerks on power trips.

I served for a while at a NATO HQs. When it rained the other nationals on station walked around with umbrellas. Our senior flag reminded the Americans that we should not sport umbrealla. So the Brits chided me and said that us Yanks didn't have the sense to come in out of the rain.

At the end of my tour on the boats, they finally started authorizing the use of what were originall coast guard exposure suits for watchstanders on the bridge during winter surface runs in the North Atlantic [subs take a lot of green water over the sail in rough weather on the surface so it is very cold and very wet.]

I have always been amazed that making sure that military forces are attired to maximize their military effectiveness is not a top consideration for commanders. It was a hard lesson to learn.

Always layer fleece with a windbreak garment of some kind.

When I played high school football it rained for a full week. This was in Minnesota so it was a cold rain in October. The coach said it would toughen us up to practice in the rain. We practiced all week in the cold rain.

Half the team came down with lung infections and couldn’t play. We ended up losing the game. The next week the coach admitted it was stupid and we practiced in the gym the next time it rained.

I worked with a man who was on ships with the navy..He said the bottom of the ocean is full of military equipment...Every time a higher up visited, all equipment they could was tossed overboard and new equipment was ordered....

I’d rather be warm. Black long johns are more “tactical”.
