He was correct. You could almost time when the fiscal year was about to end. That was when we in Supply were ordered to ‘relocate’ lots of unused or expired items. This so we could ask for increased funding for the next few quarters.

Had a CSM whose only job seemed to be hanging out at the mess hall harassing troops in Iraq tell me I couldn't wear fleece as an outer garment.

2 Star we were detailed to wrote my crew and I an approval to wear memo telling the CSM to piss off.

Never forget the day I put it in his hand. He read it and stormed off. Don't recall ever seeing him at the mess hall again.

Fond Army memories.

My daughter, (she grew up in north Idaho), shared her personal basic cold weather gear, glove liners, wool socks, etc., during her winter TBS (Marines). She was amazed at how training was not prepared or understood how to deal with cold weather.

Same thing I saw. There were guys who had done camping, etc., who were miles ahead of guys who had never done that. And assuming you're referring to "the" TBS in Quantico, no classes on that there either.

That really bad night when it was cold/raining, and we were eventually allowed to bed down, I ended up rigging a lean-to using my poncho, dug a little trench around it, etc., and did fine. But some city guys just walked around all night to stay warm. I tried to tell some of them what to do but they were kind of miserable by that point.

Learn the hard way, I guess.

Isn’t this the origin of the term, “chickenshit.”

I was in SK for 3 weeks during January. It gave me a whole new appreciation what our service men went through.

There ain’t nothing between SK and Siberia but a 3 strand barbwire fence.

It's a fleece outerwear. It's just the wrong size. Truth be told, when the fleece was first issued it was black and had no name tag or rank insignia areas and was designed for under your uniform. But if your uniforms fit properly there was not enough room to pull it over the fleece.

Commanders quickly just told troops to wear them as outerwear, relying on your headgear to identify your rank.

there could be a legitimate reason. ( but most likely not) That nice warm polyester fleece is a nightmare in a fire situation. it lights up easy, shrinks in place and you cant pull it off when burning,

All military uniforms should be fire retardant

Uniformity can be a B!!!!.

The Senior flag probably was warm and dry every day.

Being cold and catching a cold doesnt enhance readiness.

That would be a good reason not to wear it and to stop purchasing it in the future.
Maybe somebody’s brother in law sells those poly jackets wholesale and cheaply. Too bad.

Now that was a hooah moment.

Good to have a 2 star to help you out.

My First Seargent was a good Top. made sure the Battalion had all the supplies in the field. Easy to talk to if we needed something.

The air force has a variation on that. Whenever a transport plane went down, hundreds of tons of material from all squadrons on the base, were on that plane.

Beats having a cold or bronchitis.

I like being warm.

I grew up as a boy in GITMO in the 60’s.

They would cut Jeeps in half in order to ask for replacement vehicles. It was normal to see a sailor driving a “personal” Jeep that was welded back together.

One of the First Sergeants major functions is to look out for the troops. My first one was was one of the best and still my friend 45 years after I first met him.

You could hear a pin drop in his formations.
