A Russian court on Tuesday rejected Brittney Griner’s appeal after the jailed WNBA star begged for forgiveness for her “mistake” — upholding her nine-year sentence on drug charges.
Griner and her lawyers had asked for acquittal or at least a more lenient sentence, which they said was disproportionate to the offense and at odds with Russian judicial practice.
The presiding judge said the verdict was upheld “without changes” except for the counting of time served in pre-trial detention as part of the sentence. Griner is now expected to be moved to a penal colony.
The US chargee d’affaires in Moscow, Elizabeth Rood, who attended the hearing, called the sentence “excessive and disproportionate.”

Even though Vodka is the drug of choice, American soldiers who did some joint peace keeping with Russians in the former Yugoslavia told me that they were surprised to see the Russians smoking joints. I don’t know how widespread such marijuana use is there, but it may often be overlooked.

The “woman” had been in & out of Russia a number of times-—
a frequent flyer-—because she played for a Russian team on the off season of the USA teams.
She knew the rules about drugs MUCH BETTER than most travelers.
This might finally send a message to all those ‘special athletes’.
Wish we had courts that enforced the law.
I wonder what the Russian prison warden would charge us to play the American national anthem over the prison PA system about once a day for the length of her stay.

She has worked in Russia for some time, broke Russia laws, and is paying a price. 9 years does seem excessive for what she did tho.
I guess she’s hoping the guy she voted for, will get her out.. if Trump were president, she’d already be home.

Almost always there is something going on beneath the surface the general public will never know. This has little to do with US relations with Russia. She has a surly attitude and pissed off the wrong person. That the Russian higher upside can flip the diplomatic bird to Biden is just icing on the cake, not the main course.
I suspect we do not know the whole story here. It could be just Russia being vindictive but I think maybe Griner is guilty of more than is being told to us.

quite a few here don’t seem to realize “she” is actually a married guy with children that pretends to be a woman. He even is pictured shirtless during the summertime.
Griner is not a woman. He is a so called transgender married to a woman. He is a male lesbian. They were on “say Yes To The Dress”, shopping for wedding dresses and it was ridiculous.
