Russian court rejects Brittney Griner’s appeal of 9-year sentence

A Russian court on Tuesday rejected Brittney Griner’s appeal after the jailed WNBA star begged for forgiveness for her “mistake” — upholding her nine-year sentence on drug charges.

Griner and her lawyers had asked for acquittal or at least a more lenient sentence, which they said was disproportionate to the offense and at odds with Russian judicial practice.

The presiding judge said the verdict was upheld “without changes” except for the counting of time served in pre-trial detention as part of the sentence. Griner is now expected to be moved to a penal colony.

The US chargee d’affaires in Moscow, Elizabeth Rood, who attended the hearing, called the sentence “excessive and disproportionate.”

And russia has a LOT of big rocks that need to be broken into smaller ones.

play stupid games over there, you win stupid prizes.

I remember in the late 60's early 70's an anti drug PSA warning against doing drugs in other countries. "It's true. When you get busted for drugs over there, you're in for the hassle of your life". As we see, some people never learn.

That is coming from the same Dementia Joe regime that has thrown hundreds of Jan 6 protesters into jail in chains for 18 months (and counting) without trial?

Here's another case of "DON'T SMUGGLE DRUGS INTO RUSSIA" if you're an American. Guy is 61 y/o and got 14 years in prison. Had a great life up until that moment in line at the Moscow airport. I'm not sure this has been reported on here at FR...

There are three American citizens. The third is not getting the attention of the first two. See my comment at #25.

On the bright side, for her, she won’t be hearing the National Anthem for a while and she’ll be stuck in a socialist paradise those of her ilk are so fond of.

Is the sentence excessive? Absolutely yes.

Do I feel sorry for her? Absolutely not.

Some background on the Marc Fogel case. Pretty stupid.

“the jailed WNBA star begged for forgiveness for her “mistake”

She might be a WNBA ‘star’, but she made most of her money playing basketball in Russia. It is not as if she were ignorant of Russian laws on drugs, or that she was ‘packing in a hurry’. She was, in fact, going to her real job, not a side gig. She screwed up big time. Our current relationship with Russia hasn’t helped her.

Remember when President Trump got the shoplifting basketball players back home from China? Remember how the press praised him? No, I don’t either.

in Russia, you can get as drunk as you want, and sexually molest kids openly on the street like Putin did

but try to smoke weed, and you get 9 years hard time

Russia now is just like FedGov in the 1950s -

the same ignorant “marijuana = heroin” mentality

This is what a brutal dictatorship looks like ... conformity and no caring about people

Should she have avoided acting like a typical, entitled American jock and done her part to avoid trouble in a foreign country?

Absolutely yes.

“”No sympathy for someone who refused to go onto the court if the National Anthem were playing.

Now she wants that same country that she showed such disdain for to rescue her.””

I was going to say the same thing as a recent email pointed out - I’m sure it’s made the rounds. Wants the USA to bail her out after such disrespect and behavior? Some lessons are hard!!!!
