The Real Story Behind Drag Queen Story Hour. Aimed at children, the phenomenon is far more subversive than its defenders claim.
City Journal ^ | Autumn 2022 | Christopher F. Rufo

Posted on 10/24/2022 8:07:20 AM PDT by karpov

Drag Queen Story Hour—in which performers in drag read books to kids in libraries, schools, and bookstores—has become a cultural flashpoint. The political Right has denounced these performances as sexual transgressions against children, while the political Left has defended them as an expression of LGBTQ pride. The intellectual debate has even spilled into real-world conflict: right-wing militants affiliated with the Proud Boys and the Three Percenters have staged protests against drag events for children, while their counterparts in the left-wing Antifa movement have responded with offers to serve as a protection force for the drag queens.

Families with children find themselves caught in the middle. Drag Queen Story Hour pitches itself as a family-friendly event to promote reading, tolerance, and inclusion. “In spaces like this,” the organization’s website reads, “kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves.” But many parents, even if reluctant to say it publicly, have an instinctual distrust of adult men in women’s clothing dancing and exploring sexual themes with their children.

These concerns are justified. But to mount an effective opposition, one must first understand the sexual politics behind the glitter, sequins, and heels. This requires a working knowledge of an extensive history, from the origin of the first “queen of drag” in the late nineteenth century to the development of academic queer theory, which provides the intellectual foundation for the modern drag-for-kids movement.

The drag queen might appear as a comic figure, but he carries an utterly serious message: the deconstruction of sex, the reconstruction of child sexuality, and the subversion of middle-class family life. The ideology that drives this movement was born in the sex dungeons of San Francisco and incubated in the academy.

It amazes me that some parents take their children to these events at public libraries. But even parents aren't crazy risk having their children exposed to this stuff:

"Next, the New York City Public Schools, with more than $200,000 in funding from the municipal government, began hosting dozens of drag performances in elementary, middle, and high schools in all five boroughs."

I hope Rufo's conclusion is correct:

"When parents, voters, and political leaders understand the true nature of Drag Queen Story Hour and the ideology that drives it, they will work quickly to restore the limits that have been temporarily—and recklessly—abandoned. They will draw a bright line between adult sexuality and childhood innocence, and send the perversions of “genderfuck,” “primitivism,” and “degeneracy” back to the margins, where they belong."

Bullcrap… if a parent takes a kid to this, they are a degenerate. There is no “caught in the middle”.

I don’t understand how Drag Queen story hour at public libraries was allowed in the first place.

Did pressure groups organize to force these events to happen, and threaten lawsuits if drag queens were banned? Did the authorities who run libraries want to bend over backwards to prove that they aren’t discriminating against draq or gays or other alternative lifestyles???

My personal opinion is that drag queens should be considered as “adult” events, on the same level as pornography or places such as strip joints. Legally speaking, apparently, drag is not considered to be an adults only activity.

The article says, "Drag Queen Story Hour began with voluntary programs at public libraries, which are required by law to provide equal access to organizations regardless of political affiliation or ideology."

“I don’t understand how Drag Queen story hour at public libraries was allowed in the first place.”

The reason is parents didn’t show up in mass protesting at the city council or board of county commissioners for the locality responsible for the public library. Until pushed back, the left continues to push the boundaries of the culture.

Parents in Virginia have shown the way by speaking out at school board meetings. Show up at the meetings of local government officials in mass and speak out against the destruction of the culture.

Clowns: bad and must be banned/removed for fear of traumatizing children.
Drag Queens: good and must be enshrined as a necessary/established part of children’s education.

I’ve ceased to ask the question ‘how did we get here?’ in such matters.

Also, graduate programs in “library science” and the American Library Assn. — and most librarians — are all exclusively leftwing, very leftwing.

"right-wing militants affiliated with the Proud Boys and the Three Percenters have staged protests against drag events for children, while their counterparts in the left-wing Antifa movement have responded with offers to serve as a protection force for the drag queens"

Recently ANQUEEFAS volunteered as "security" for a drag joint in Roanoke, TX putting on a "child friendly " event. They were OPENLY BRANDISHING AR15s. Yet neither Beto the fake Latino nor the Karens from Moms Demand Action or any gun grabber so much as uttered one peep of concern. Hell, they're all in on this. Leftists think they're slick when it comes to picking and choosing their battles, aren't they?

If someone is driving by a child and slows down, there will be a three-state alert for the pervert. Even if the driver was just adjusting the GPS.

So how did men with lipstick, fake boobs and wigs get to wiggle, jiggle and flash in front of kids in school without anyone calling the cops?

Is it because the cops will arrest the one who calls them?

Is “librarian” a gay profession, like “hair dresser”, “interior decorator”, and “journalist”?

This article doesn’t go far enough. Drag has its roots in the blackface minstrel shows of the 1800’s, with exaggerated depictions of what black people are like. The male actors began also dressing up as women in blackface, and at the turn of the century dropped the black part of it. There is an extreme hatred of women in the drag community and that’s why they do it.

They cannot “ aim at children” without stupid parents cooperating by taking little children to these events

Have you seen the parents in some of these videos?

"Where everyone can be their authentic selves."

So people who wear wigs, clothes of the opposite sex, fake boobs and garish make-up are demonstrating how authentic they are?

I know two librarians. One is straight, married to a veteran. One is lesbian. Both have kids. Never seen them express an opinion about drag queens.

I was 19, it was the early '70's, I went to the men's room at our local drive-in theater. They had those 'half-urinals' (not the kind that extend down to the floor). There was a little boy trying to pee, but he was too small to pee into the urinal. I went over, picked up by the armpits so he could pee.

Today? Your own your own kid.

This is the first I've heard of that angle! Maybe that will gain some traction, since nothing else seems to, even in the face of what looks to me to be an obvious utter travesty.

Y’know I’d never even considered it being a “gay profession,” but come to think of it . . . I clearly remember the one male employee at my small hometown library, a very effeminate fellow named Kent. Odd that I should remember him so clearly after half a century! Even as naïve as we were about such things, we knew instinctively that he wasn’t quite right and we made fun of him — behind his back, of course, never to his face. But librarianship has traditionally been an almost entirely female occupation, like nursing and elementary-school education. How things change!

I work from most days, but last Thursday, we had the pest control guy coming.

I decided to work from our local library for a few hours.

There are some very strange people in the library.

Workers and patrons.

This was a great article. But this part is a fantasy. The people who want to understand this already fully understand it. The ones that promote it, agree with it, and send their kids to it ARE already on board. And those people overwhelmingly are in charge of the libraries, the educational system and the government. This isn't going to get better. That ship sailed.
