Oklahoma used to have work gangs that would work along interstates.

What nonsense he killed his own child by bending her backwards until her spine broke because she was crying…

Don’t give me mental incapacitation nonsense.

It is disgusting he walked this earth for 20 more years after doing that

That’s nothing...we have one guy on death row that has been there since 1986. He raped, murdered and cut the vagina out of a 7 year old girl. The girl was the daughter of his girlfriend. After she broke up with him, he kidnapped her daughter and raped/murdered her. He was arrested shortly after the crime which occurred on July 7, 1984. He has been in custody since. His conviction was overturned twice for judicial error. He has been on death row for 36 years. In that time, the State has paid for a hip replacement, and saved his life from bladder cancer, as well as several other major illnesses. And he is still appealing his case. It’s been 38 years since little Layla was murdered and we are still dealing with her killer. Should have let him die from the cancer.

Cole’s lawyers were all Assistant Federal Public Defenders I believe. So they make anywhere from $100,000 to about $150,000.

I am not sure that a life sentence is any more expensive than the endless appeals of death sentences. How is life, with no parole different from a death penalty when it takes 40 years to be executed for a crime? I do think the wheels of justice grind too slowly on death penalty sentences, that is not always a bad thing.

That said, I support death sentences for many crimes. I support them for sex crimes, rape, or pedophiles. Treason should be punishable by death. I support executing most murderers. I might also support the death penalty for crimes such as importing narcotics, human trafficking, and similar crimes; but I also believe there should be a higher level of proof of guilt; not beyond reasonable doubt, but beyond ALL doubt to consider the death penalty. Given DNA and the advanced forensic procedures available to the prosecution that should not be too high a hurdle.

Because of all the appeals that are involved in a death penalty case, it is actually cheaper financially to impose a life without parole sentence than it is to go through the death penalty appeal process. However, financial cost shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Some people just deserve it regardless of the cost. One way to lessen the cost is to prohibit endless appeals, motions, pleadings, etc.

What’s the problem? It was just a postponed abortion, wasn’t it?

I would think that one appeal, with perhaps a year or two for the lawyers to get things in order would be doable. Two years seems like so long, but that seems to be the amount of time some of these cases take before they show up at trial in the first place.

Not sure what happened to the fair and SPEEDY trial thing along the course of history.

The creep that murdered the two nurses in the Dallas hospital the other day had a very lengthy criminal record and was out on parole with an ankle monitor attached. Something like that should NEVER happen. Those poor nurses in the maternity ward! This nation needs to get tough on criminals, they’re being coddled while they terrorize us. The pendulum has swung way too far the other way.
