President Xi Jinping on Sunday kicked-off the 20th congress of China's ruling Communist Party with warnings that he may use force to retake Taiwan as he slammed foreign interference in its reunification efforts.
The gathering of roughly 2,300 delegates from around the country began in the vast Great Hall of the People on the west side of Tiananmen Square amid tight security and under blue skies after several smoggy days in the Chinese capital.
Xi began a speech that touted the party's safeguarding of national security, maintaining social stability, protecting people's lives and taking control of the situation in Hong Kong, which was rocked by anti-government protests in 2019.
On Taiwan, Xi said, 'We have resolutely waged a major struggle against separatism and interference, demonstrating our strong determination and ability to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity and oppose Taiwan independence.'
The gathered delegates responded with loud applause as their president emphasized that China will 'never commit to abandoning the use of force' in its unification with Taiwan, which he called inevitable.
Xi added that China will accelerate the building of a world-class military and strengthen its ability to build a strategic deterrent capability
Xi reaffirment of China's power in Asia comes after President Joe Biden vowed the US military will defend Taiwan if China launches an invasion as he ramped up the rhetoric with Beijing over the tiny island nation.
The President suggested he would deploy troops to the region if Xi Jinping's forces initiated an 'unprecedented attack'. But his explosive comments were quickly torpedoed by the White House, which said official policy had not changed.
An official rushed to stress the US remains 'strategic ambiguity' to the threat to Taiwan - as set out in the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act.

China/Taiwan is a tough problem. The U.S views Taiwan as part of China. You have the spectacle now of the U.S taking the stance that Donetsk,Luhansk and Crimea are part of Ukraine and Ukraine is right to take back the territory militarily that it sees as renegade, but China which views Taiwan as renegade may not take back Taiwan military without U.S opposition. Of course there are the arguments Ukraine is not run by commies and China is, but still it seems inconsistent to me. If Taiwan declared independence it would look even more inconsistent if the U.S intervened, given that it signed an agreement with the PRC recognising Taiwan as part of China. Don’t get me wrong, I loathe the CCP the way some loathe Putin on FR
Ok gongfei.
Yea. We need some here.
Maybe they’re not full supporters, but many of the younger people in Taiwan don’t hate the Motherland as their elders do. They see it as the best place to go and make money.
China is one of Australia’s biggest threats
US liberated Taiwan from Japan.
US owns Taiwan but is not a colonial power, but has never recognized PRC sovereignty over Taiwan. This goes back to 1949 and has never changed.
You have it 100% backwards.
Young people in Taiwan overwhelmingly do not think Taiwan is part of China or that they are Chinese.
The dwindling number of Taiwanese that favor unification (not as part of PRC) are mainly older.
The saber rattling is ramped up due to the power struggle. After this party congress it will subside.
And Canada’s for that matter. All those happy snaps taken my chinese tourists and students, go straight to Chinese military intelligence. They have every port in fine detail. Filling in the deficencies in satellite pics. I saw a bunch taking heaps of photos of our F35A L II’ the other day from outside the base fence and I looked around just hoping we are on top of this happy snap shite
‘Taken by’ I should say
no argument about that
and then there’s the matter of all the university students ...
Why fight? We need China for its high tech manufacturing and medical supplies. And China needs our fast food chains and Hollywood tranny films.
That’s why it seems so contradictory. On the one hand the U.S doesn’t recognise mainland China sovereignty over Taiwan but still sees Taiwan as a part of China. I understand why the U.S came up with this bizarre scensrio in 72 as a means of trying to maybe de communise China ( and of course make some money). I could be wrong, but Taiwan is probably the only territory that is seen as part of another but is considered a sovereign entity.
Definitely. And immigrstion too. Chinese have a long history in Australia, particularly during the goldrush years. But there numbers have increased a lot and they a not all concentrated in ‘chins towns’ now. There are nearly 1.5 millon now. Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against Chinese per se. Historically they are a smart, industrious people, but I do have concerns that if push came to shove with China, we could have a considerable 5th column on our hands.
As usual Daily Mail exaggerates what XI said......and this is why Media is one of the top security dangers to the world.
Yes it’s bizarre.
Nixon and Kissinger got all caught up in China and were willing to “trade” Taiwan for South Vietnam.
This fever took over the entire foreign policy establishment.
They failed to save South Vietnam yet still abandoned Taiwan. But Chiang and his son didn’t go along with it. Then Lee Teng-hui moved Taiwan to a full democracy and the policy became an anachronism. It’s like a superstition.
Sensationalism sells.
Let them invade Taiwan,,,,,,and invoke the Wrath of Khan
Khan is feared around the world! ( sarc.)
Little gurls tremble at his touch!
America is about to lose its strategic advantage in the Western Pacific. We have no strategic oil reserve, aned Biden has sent half of our ordnance to Ukraine without replacing it. Joe Biden is abou to leave our allies Australia, South Korea Japan and others in the lurch.VERY BAD! Joe Biden needs to be tarred, feathered and run out on a rail.
