China/Taiwan is a tough problem. The U.S views Taiwan as part of China. You have the spectacle now of the U.S taking the stance that Donetsk,Luhansk and Crimea are part of Ukraine and Ukraine is right to take back the territory militarily that it sees as renegade, but China which views Taiwan as renegade may not take back Taiwan military without U.S opposition. Of course there are the arguments Ukraine is not run by commies and China is, but still it seems inconsistent to me. If Taiwan declared independence it would look even more inconsistent if the U.S intervened, given that it signed an agreement with the PRC recognising Taiwan as part of China. Maybe they’re not full supporters, but many of the younger people in Taiwan don’t hate the Motherland as their elders do. They see it as the best place to go and make money.

Young people in Taiwan overwhelmingly do not think Taiwan is part of China or that they are Chinese.
The dwindling number of Taiwanese that favor unification (not as part of PRC) are mainly older.

Why fight? We need China for its high tech manufacturing and medical supplies. And China needs our fast food chains and Hollywood tranny films.
That’s why it seems so contradictory. On the one hand the U.S doesn’t recognise mainland China sovereignty over Taiwan but still sees Taiwan as a part of China. I understand why the U.S came up with this bizarre scensrio in 72 as a means of trying to maybe de communise China ( and of course make some money). I could be wrong, but Taiwan is probably the only territory that is seen as part of another but is considered a sovereign entity.
Definitely. And immigrstion too. Chinese have a long history in Australia, particularly during the goldrush years. But there numbers have increased a lot and they a not all concentrated in ‘chins towns’ now. There are nearly 1.5 millon now. Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against Chinese per se. Historically they are a smart, industrious people, but I do have concerns that if push came to shove with China, we could have a considerable 5th column on our hands.

This fever took over the entire foreign policy establishment.
They failed to save South Vietnam yet still abandoned Taiwan. But Chiang and his son didn’t go along with it. Then Lee Teng-hui moved Taiwan to a full democracy and the policy became an anachronism. It’s like a superstition.
