Ukraine: Russian missile assault rocks Kyiv, other cities — live updates

Ukraine's State Emergency Services said at least 11 people have been killed and more than 60 wounded in Russian missile strikes on several Ukrainian cities Monday.

The strikes are the largest coordinated assault on Ukrainian cities since the early days of the war. The Russian Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted Ukraine's military command and communication facilities and energy infrastructure.

At least six people were killed in Kyiv when missiles struck several locations in the city center during morning rush hour. Officials in the central city of Dnipro said four people were killed.

The leader of Ukraine's armed forces, Valeriy Zaluzhny, said around 75 Russian missiles were launched, of which more than 40 were shot down by Ukrainian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian forces had also used Iran-built armed attack drones.

Earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that 11 major infrastructure targets were hit in eight regions, causing widespread disruption to electricity, water and communications.

Emergency services wrote on Telegram that the regions of Lviv, Poltava, Sumy and Ternopil currently have no electricity following the strikes, with other regions experiencing partial disruptions.

And if someone - like Russia - invaded us, we'd shoot/hang/filet collaborators. When you're invaded, you fight back.

Easy enough for ya?

I think the next time they launch missiles, they will evaluate the losses of missiles shot down incoming, and factor how to overcome Ukraianian Air & Missile Defenses.

(My wife was the Arrow Field Office Program Manager in Tel Aviv in 2005-06 while I was at the Embassy).

I learned a hell of lot of good information on the Arrow Missle System, especially talking with US and Israeli officials at the quarterly conferences. It was developed jointly between our DOD and MOD in Israel and if memory serves correctly, the Patroit P system. Originally, the Patriot system was developed to replace the HAWKs - again memory? There were offensive systems and it was a novel idea to recalibrate the system for missile defense:)

Also, I know the DOD has Memorandums of Agreement with Germany and Japan to develop their own versions of usage for the famous Arrow System.

Information was passed from Isreali MOD to Arrow Field Office who in turn took it the Embassy IPC to be sent by classified Diplomatic Pouch - unlucky for me, I was assigned to personnaly take care of my wife. I went to her office an they had records going back 19-20 years on program; she instutied a clean up of the 20 or so TS /S safes and reduced information storage by 85% in coordination US Missile Command. She got promoted for all her initative and rejoined in me Hong Kong after her replacement was found... the guy she replacec;)

In my humble opinion, I believe Russia has a production capability of 1000 missiles a month, and can produce 60,000 artillery rounds (they are shooting up mostly cold war reserve stocks at present for Artillery), and literally has access to facilities to product even more missiles and small arms ammunition.

From what I can tell (again my interest was history and keeping myself alive as a young paratrooper 74-77/77-80; 84-90. I would not hesitate to venture that Russia could repeat this type of attack weekly.

Additionally, I believe that prior to the nuclear bombs in the USSR, they developed some massive TNT bombs that were almost as strong as the first nuclear weapons. There may be prohibitions upon the usage of High Yeild Conventional Bombs, if not Russia might pull a few out of cold storage and lay waste to the Wheat fields to keep the death toll down but to demonstrate that nukes are over effective (nutrons less damaging) and convention high yield bombs could encourage Ukriane to not push Moscow to hit them with some serious TNT convention bombs that seem like nukes when you access the damage, just not radiation.

Yes, Russia could do it tomorrow but target selection, damage assessment, missile loses to defensive systems, etc., will limit the targets.

If I were in the Kermlin, I would make and fire a bunch of missiles that were just decoys with only self destruct capability or maybe cheap bomb crap to drain the Ukrainian defensived missile commands stockpiles of such defensive fire systems.

In Viet Nam LTC Wickmen was sent to serve on the Paris Peace Talks in Paris. The Chinese, Russian & N. Viet Nammise had developed the ploy of Iron Face and stallking. Nixon unleashed the Christmas Air Bombings of Hanoi. The first day the US (USAF/NAVY) lost dozens of aircraft either directly shot down or so heavily damaged they were then used for repair parts. The second day the Boys if the Iron Face again laughed and mocked the US Delegation. That first day NVM launched 1400+ SAMs, the second day 1100 or so, the third day they mustered around 900, and Iron Face boys no longer laughed, but they mocked that the US could not afford to keep losing aircraft in the numbers we were. The stalement continued for 11 days. Gen. Wickman told me while showing me his historic manuscript, that by day 7 their were only spradoic SAM fire of less than 100 SAMs. By the 8th day the United States showed NVN, China & Russia (they could drain the most heavily defended air defense in world) and could reduce Hanoi to literal WWII era air defense artillery and machine guns. The US was flying Jets in massive sorties over Hanoi at 200-300 feet. At the end of the 11th day, Honoi compitulated to Nixon’s peace demands at the accords. Later the democrats blocked the support the SVN in 76 as Ford oversaw the Presidency, but congress broke our defense pack with SNV. Sound’s familiar how the democrats leave our allies hang, out, to die, so to speak over the years since 1976.

I told the above story as reminder that missiles today do the job that AC did back then. Defenses are better but more expensive.... Ukraine relies totally on the rest of the West for arms. Russia is still firing 1960s artillery rounds from some of the old artillery. Russia has the capacity and the conventional firepower to inflice a repear of the Hanoi Christmass Bombing campaign using their own mix of materiel, men and equipment.

Again, yea. Yea, that Russia can produce enough missiles to do the do job, and that Russia has to determine how best to destroy the Energy Grid and Rail Roads effectively.

Yesterdays attacks were on infrastructure vital to the Ukraine, e.g., especially electric grid for factorys and homes to have some electic in the previous short rolling blackouts of elec. I am sure the electric rationing will become a real issue forcing Ukrainians to flee their Country to cross over into Poland, Germany, etc.

Biden is Bidening (bleeding) Russia in the hopes the NWO can take over the 1/7th of the world land mass Russia owns for resources and expanded greed. Biden is bleeding the Ukrainians whom he and Hunter fleeced for millions, before starting this war.

Show up in our country and you won't have to worry about my "arse".

You FSB/GRU types keep learning Brit slang in your English training - Americans don't use them. Gives you away every time.

Specifically, why did Russia invade Ukraine in the first place?

“Chechnya Is a Republic of Russia and the other two sit on its border.”

“Chechnya Is a Republic of Russia...”

Yes, it is one of 22 republics in the Russian Federation. Russian forces invaded Chechnya when Chechnya sought independence. It’s similar to Lincoln ordering federal troops to invade Virginia in 1861.

“...list the countries around the world that the US has either invade or fought proxy wars in over the last 30 years.”

Your argument is fallacious; specifically, the Tu Quoque fallacy. It is immaterial what the US did or didn’t do, as we are not discussing the US.

Nice try, though. Better luck next time.

“They should look at our example. We never invade anyone. At least we make it a rule not to have more that twenty wars going on at the same time… usually.”

Hyperbole doesn’t help your argument. It actually diminishes it.

“But you wouldn’t agree with the list, because “invasion” doesn’t also include bombing other nations, does it? Else we’re still number one in the comparison! Yea, number one!”

Invasion means sending forces into another’s country for the purpose of conquest or plunder.

Aerial bombing or lobbing rockets across the border is not invasion. However, such actions often precede invasion. But they are two separate and distinct actions that can stand alone.

“The Crimea was taken by force from the Ottoman Empire in 1783 by Catherine the Great. It has been Russian for over 240 years.”

So what? It ceased being part of Russia in 1954, when the Kremlin ceded it to the Ukraine SSR. In 1991, with the collapse of and break-up of the USSR, Ukraine — Crimea and all — became an independent and sovereign nation, separate and distinct from Russia or any other country, and has been internationally recognized as such for over 30 years.

“Russia has their largest naval base there.”

By way of the Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation – by which Russia rented its naval base at Sevastopol from the Ukrainian government.

“The Ukraine is delusional if they think Russia is going to let them or anyone take the Crimea.”

I’ll put you down in the column of possession trumps law. Where do you live? Some gang bangers might just take your house, because...well, possession trumps the law. And if you squawk about it, you’re a hypocrite and a fraud.

I paid enough attention to get an A.

Give it up, son. I showed where your argument failed.
