The bridge had been a pet project of Putin's after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and key in the war effort However, the Kremlin has played down fears of a nuclear response, saying these are 'completely incorrect'

A red-faced Vladimir Putin has branded the attack on a bridge in Crimea a 'terror attack' and blamed Ukrainian special forces for the explosion which severely damaged the key link to the Russian mainland.

Speaking ahead of a meeting with his Security Council tomorrow, the livid Russian president said the blast at the Kerch bridge was designed to destroy 'critically important civilian infrastructure'.

He declared that the attack was a terrorist incident, a move that could open the door for further escalation in the war that has raged in Ukraine since Russia's illegal invasion in February.

Lord Dannatt, former head of the British Army, said among other things the authoritarian leader could order the indescriminate shelling of Ukrainian cities and could even 'go nuclear'.

However, the Kremlin has played down fears from some Western observers that it could use nuclear weapons in retalation, saying it is 'completely incorrect' that it is considering using them in response.

Russian governors have threatened revenge missile attacks after the destruction of the bridge on Saturday morning, which was considered to be one of his pet projects.

So, a commando raid (Putin’s words, as he described the actors as Ukrainian special ops) on a legitimate military target (a bridge that is used by Russian forces for transport of men and materiel and supplies to be used in Russia’s prosecution of its war against Ukraine) is now a terrorist attack?

Commando raids have been employed by pretty much every nation that has ever been engaged in hostilities.

If the US invaded Canada and the Canadians blew up a bridge in the US, particularly one with strategic importance, that would be an act of war, not "terrorism".

Only when Russia does the invading is it "terrorism" when the invaded nation has the temerity to fight back.
