Democrats cover for IRS destruction of 30 million taxpayer filings
Washington Examiner ^ | Oct 7, 2022

If ordinary taxpayers fail to file returns, congressional Democrats hire 87,000 new IRS agents to punish them. Yet if the IRS destroys 30 million “tax information” returns without even processing, those Democrats actively block attempts to demand an explanation.

Apparently, Democrats think transparency is unnecessary for tax collectors for the welfare state.

For those who missed the original story, some background is in order, especially to understand how astonishingly brazen the Democrats are in refusing to hold the IRS accountable. On May 22, the treasury inspector general for tax administration reported that the IRS deliberately destroyed 30 million returns in 2021 so as to relieve a backlog of paper documents in anticipation of a flood of new filings. The agency cited software limitations as an excuse.

The decision was met with widespread incredulity. “How can the agency ask taxpayers to meet their filing obligations for information returns when it cavalierly destroys duly filed documents?” asked Nina Olson, former national taxpayer advocate. Brian Streig, a certified public accountant for Calhoun, Thomson + Matza, LLP, added that “small businesses stress out every year in January trying to accurately prepare these informational returns and get them filed on time. To see the IRS just destroy these is almost like the IRS admitting they don’t really care.”........

Then, if you innocently file an incorrect return, the IRS can penalize you, sometimes severely — but if the IRS doesn’t want to actually bother with documents it requires people to file, it can destroy them without even processing them.

And then refuse to provide justification for its decision.

That’s how progressive Democrats roll these days: The rulers answer to nobody, but they pick your pockets clean.

A treasury deposit from them is easy proof. A record of you sending them money, also clear evidence you filed your taxes.

You just asked for proof you filed, you didn’t ask for every document you’d need for an audit.

That was the first question I had.

It would not surprise me in the least.

The IRS also claims “[t]here were no negative taxpayer consequences as a result of this action,” and taxpayers will not be subject to penalties resulting from the IRS’s actions.

And I have some nice waterfront property in FL to sell you. Honest.

Anyone who believes this is a fool. The government are pathological liars.

Are we supposed to believe that they kept records of whose tax returns they destroyed so they would know who not to audit or falsely accuse of never having filed a return?

…if there are so many they can’t even process them, why are we being forced to file them?

Information returns don’t really get processed. They exist to provide documentation of transactions that were reported and processed on the actual tax return.

The IRS likes documentation of what you claim on your return but they rarely examine it - only if there’s a problem or an audit.

That may be why a brother of mine has never received his 2021 refund, and inquiries with the IRS have been met with literally “I don’t know” kind of answers every time.

We filed paper returns and only in the past couple of weeks our college-age children received their refunds; we are waiting for hours because we had a lot of one-time medical bills that generated a nice refund - though it may have raised flags because we normally don’t have that.

The “Where is my refund” function on the website does nothing, but there was a warning that 2020 returns had recently been finished and they were now processing 2021.

I’ll re-think filing paper going forward, as if this was simply tossed I can’t do anything but re-file (though these were all mailed together).

There is an unmentioned factor.

The returns in question were apparently paper returns. The electronically filed returns were not and could not be destroyed. The IRS is apparently saying we deal only with electronically filed returns.

When I googled (actually duck duck go-ed) "Information Return Form Number", the only forms that came back were things like 1098's, 1099's, 5498. None of those were actual income tax returns, like a 1040, 1065, 1120, 990.

In other words, if you have a small business and pay contractors more than $600 in one calendar year, you are supposed to send each contractor a 1099-NEC or whatever, and send copies to the feds. That is supposed to be the source of a match between what you claim as expenses, and the contractors claim as income. If you are small enough, sending paper copies to the government is easier, faster and cheaper than doing it electronically.

What that means is that the government won't bother trying to match the spender's copy to the income claimer's copy. They apparently will rely on intimidation to have most contractors claim the income.

The article would have been vastly improved with an illustration of what an information return is, but that is probably asking too much.

Sure. It’s all brand spanking new. They’ll probably need to redraw a few maps, though.

That is, if anyone wants it any more.

True and those 87,000 new IRS agents...why spend the money for that instead of spending it on more processing equipment and computers?

Joe Biden has simplified filing tax returns to only two lines.

1. How much did you make?
2. Send it in.
