All have fallen for the believe that the Ukrainian rapid advance has caused a Russian defeat. That however is not the case.
The main Russian forces had already left the area. What was left were sentry guards of the Luhansk People’s Republic and a few companies of the Russian National Guard which is more or less a police force. That is why the ‘western’ official talking with Reuters is quite cautious with his assessment:
“There’s an ongoing debate about the nature of the Russian drawdown, however it’s likely that in strict military terms, this was a withdrawal, ordered and sanctioned by the general staff, rather than an outright collapse.” … “Obviously, it looks really dramatic. It’s a vast area of land. But we have to factor in the Russians have made some good decisions in terms of shortening their lines and making them more defensible, and sacrificing territory in order to do so,” the official said, adding he did not expect Russia to immediately seek to regain lost territory.

On Russian social media, there is incessant crowing about Russia’s nuclear superiority and its ability to defeat the United States. They brag about their missiles and their warheads. They are not joking when they speak about retaking Alaska. Even the speaker of the Duma talks in terms of reversing the “illegal” transfer of Alaska. They also speak in the most hateful terms of Ukrainian culture, the Ukrainian people, and of course Americans.
The globo-grifters needed a greek chorus of MSM headlines declaring great victories, so they could send another 80 billion into the laundromat without much complaint.
When they finish transferring the funds, the celebrations of victory will die down, and we will resume our regularly scheduled propaganda.
Ukraine took back 5% of the land it took Russia seven months to occupy in a week, blocked and trapped 20,000 to 40,000 Russians so they could not do anything about, destroyed and captured hundreds of vehicles and took thousands of prisoners, in the largest and most successful military operation in Europe since World War II.
If that's no big deal, Russia better worry what Ukraine thinks a real victory would look like.
Alexander Mercouris is a disbarred British lawyer. He knows law (supposedly), not international politics, economics and definitely not warfare. On his YouTube channel when he has nothing else to say, he says Bakhmut is being encircle and about to be captured, for the past month. He is still saying that even after Russian forces were driven back.
"If Russian Defense Ministry numbers are halfway right"? Russian MOD numbers make the Vietnam kill counts look honest. Russian numbers of Ukraine's losses are so high that if Ukraine had all that equipment, Russia would have never attacked, and if they destroyed all what is claimed Russia would have already won.
According to Oryx at the internet archive, Russia lost 550 vehicles between September 8 and the 16. Regular army units have hundreds of vehicles like that, not police and militia forces.
So what the pro-Russian side is, extremely selectively looking at and mixing and matching, place, time, sequence of events, and selectively leaving off what information implies to reach conclusions opposite from reality.
