The only city captured intact by Putin’s forces remains a hotbed of resistance and partisan activity.
It was the news many in Kherson had waited six months to hear. The Ukrainian counter-offensive launched this week to recapture the southern city was cheered by those who have suffered under Russian rule since Moscow’s forces took over in March.
Residents in Kherson, strategically located on the Dnipro river that cuts across the country, reported hearing missile strikes and explosions around the city, which had made the Russian patrol increasingly jumpy.
“The pro-Ukrainian activity of people who remain in Kherson is very high,” said one resident in his mid-40s. “People here closely follow events at the front, cheer for the armed forces and await the liberation of the city.”
“Explosions are happening every day,” said another Kherson resident, a pensioner. Like all those who spoke to the Financial Times by phone from the city this week, they asked that their names be withheld for their safety.
Kherson remains the only provincial Ukrainian capital captured intact by Russian forces since President Vladimir Putin ordered the full invasion of the country in February, and the only territory occupied by Russian forces that lies west of the Dnipro river.

We KNOW that Matt is an actual American.
We DON'T know about YOU, Speedy mini-me.
If any of that were actually true, there is no way in hell any members of the EU, or the U.S., would still be sending money and armaments to Ukraine. By definition, we'd have stopped, promised that we wouldn't do it again, and be begging Russia to finish its conquest of Ukraine and start shipping fuel again. Because we would all have been brought to our knees. Right?
If all this is true, why is NATO refusing to engage, including the U.S.?
We are and have been very much engaged in terms of providing critical military support. Because Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and we don't want to automatically trigger WW3, we haven't gotten directly involved militarily. But that was also true right at the very outset if this war, long before the loss of Russian fuel had even happened, and long before any possible claim that we were "crippled" or "brought to our knees".
If anything, we have increased our support of Ukraine since the loss of Russia fuel. So if we are "crippled" and "on our knees" before the glory of Mother Russia, we sure have a funny way of showing it.

I believe you sent this to the wrong party. I loathe the pitiful Ukie morons and even more, their paid propagandists and useful idiots.
What ever nationality has nothing to do with anything, Mr. Time Waster. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were actual Americans.
Ukraine is pining for the fjords!
“We’re not obsessed by anything, you see,” insisted Ford.
“...”
“And that’s the deciding factor. We can’t win against obsession. They care, we don’t. They win.”
“I care about lots of things,” said Slartibartfast, his voice trembling partly with annoyance, but partly also with uncertainty.
“Such as?”
“Well,” said the old man, “life, the Universe. Everything, really. Fjords.”
“Would you die for them?”
“Fjords?” blinked Slartibartfast in surprise. “No.”
“Well then.”
“Wouldn’t see the point, to be honest.”
What a fascinating and telling reply.
Except of course these two.
“I have no doubt at all.”
The only problem with what you’re saying - in an analogy - is that it doesn’t make sense. Zelensky was running against an incumbent president (Poroshenko). Trump (if he’s the nominee in 2024; or any Republican nominee) would be running against an incumbent Biden who dominates the MSM because of its bias. Even if you’re just talking about the midterms - since you mention 2023 - your analogy still doesn’t work for the very same reason. In other words, your analogy is backwards. How do you not understand that?
That’s a bright idea. I wonder why nobody else thought of it. NATO to go attack Russian forces. And even if Poland attacks Russian forces, that makes Poland a target.
You’re a real strategic thinker there.
“Ask you FSB handlers”
“Everybody who disagrees with me is a Russian/Chinese/ISIS/Iranian etc agent”
Are you a bot, or an under-11-year-old posting from mommy’s basement?
Geez, up your game. It’s embarrassing.
That election was when Z ran on a platform of ending the war against the Donbass, implementing Minsk 2, and ending the ethnic cleansing.
After he won a huge landslide, the Azov nazis refused his orders to remove artillery and heavy weapons from the east, and to redeploy to the west.
They refused the order, in person, ON VIDEO. They told him they would return with an even bigger force and hang him from a tree on Kreschatik street in Kiev.
He folded in the face of nazi threats, and the US State and DOD pushing him to walk away from Minsk.
Travis served and you are pure trash for calling him a foreign agent.
You are right.
PIF said “What ever nationality has nothing to do with anything”
I guess we know now! lol Another foreigner.
Two things:
1) We are current 30 trillion 865 billion dollars in debt, when you count in unfunded liabilities, it's 222 trillion. So, should we be sending any money there?
If it were not for the fact that we are the world's reserve currency, we wouldn't be able to print money like drunken sailors. If BRICS has their way they will topple the dollar as the world's reserve currency, we may lose that honor. What do you think that will do to us overnight? Think Zimbabwe.
Problem is we are no longer energy independent of foreign oil. So, we can't help Europe one iota.
Total fabrication
It was a trap and now they are in crisis
The “offensive” was risky
That wasn’t a quote of me, did you get something mixed up?
